FR. HUMPHREY ANTHONY RUSZEL, CR, was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on June 12, 1918, the son of immigrant Polish parents, Onufry Ruszel and Marya Tralka Ruszel. He attended St. Casimir Elementary School and St. Catherine's High School in Wisconsin, and then entered the Congregation of the Resurrection, professing religious vows on February 2, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois. He lived the consecrated life in the Catholic Church for more than 73 years, until his death at the age of 92, on Saturday, April 09, 2011, in Apple Valley, California. Following his ordination as a priest on January 13, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, Fr. Ruszel worked in various parishes and schools in the U.S. and Canada and earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. After brief service in his early ministry in San Diego and Fontana, he returned to the San Bernardino area in 1987, serving at Resurrection Parish in Fontana, where he resided until recently moving to Apple Valley. Fr. Ruszel was preceded in death by his parents, Onufry and Mary Ruszel; his 4-year-old brother, Tadeusz Ruszel; his brother-in-law, Edward Rygiel, and a nephew, Philip Edward Rygiel. Surviving are his loving sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Rygiel in Kenosha; his brother, Reverend Henry Albert Ruszel C.R., of Apple Valley California; a niece, Rosanne Rygiel of Kenosha; and a nephew, Jim (Theresa) Rygiel. Also surviving are grand-nephews and nieces: Angela Bodven, Kenosha; Rita (Michael) Stam, Oshkosh; Benjamin Bodven, Racine; Sarah and Jackson Rygiel, Pacific Palisades, CA. In addition, he is survived by a great-grand niece and nephew, Madeline and Stam. The Congregation of the Resurrection, and the Church are grateful for his 73 years in consecrated life, and 65 years as a priest of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Father Henry Ruszel for the loving and dedicated manner in which he cared for Father Humphrey during the last years of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to Resurrection Seminary, c/o Our Lady of the Desert Church, 18386 Corwin Rd., Apple Valley CA 92307. The Vigil will be held at Blessed John XXIII, 7650 Tamarind Ave., Fontana, CA, Tuesday, April 12th from 6-9 P.M. with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 13th at 11 A.M. at Blessed John XXIII. The Burial will take place on Friday, April 15th in Niles, Illinois. Services were entrusted to Dickey Mortuary, Fontana, CA.
