Lucille Plotkin Obituary

Lucille S. Kessler Plotkin, R.N., 97, of Scranton, died Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Hospice of Northeast PA at Regional Hospital of Scranton. Her husband, the late Abe L. Plotkin, died in 2007.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Meyer Kessler and Mollie Kessler Friedman, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and went to the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing where she became the first Jewish nurse of any of its graduating classes. Before retirement, she was employed by Mercy Hospital.

She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Abe, who lectured and educated the public about the Holocaust. She was a member of Temple Israel and its sisterhood, as well as Hadassah. Lucille was a loving, selfless and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sitting outside on warm days and cherished time spent with her family at home. Reading mystery novels and enjoying a good movie in the theater were her favorite pastimes. Out of the countless treasured moments, the endless love she displayed for her family is the most memorable. Lucille will be deeply missed, but her kind heart and warm smile will always be remembered.

The recognition must be made to Lori O'Leary for the exceptional care she provided for Lucille and the immense amount of love and care she displayed. Lori held the admirable ability to make Lucille laugh and smile, little gifts in the truest sense that brought so much comfort and joy to Lucille. For this unwavering love and immeasurable generosity, Lucille's family remains indebted to Lori for her kindness, strength and friendship.

Surviving are a daughter, Marcie Lunney and husband, Daniel, Scranton; grandchildren, Brittany Lunney, Philadelphia; and Andrew Lunney, Scranton; as well as nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Marc Seth Plotkin; and brothers, George and Dr. Robert Kessler.

The funeral will be Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon. Interment will be in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 until the time of service. Shiva will be observed at the residence of her daughter, 111 Penwood Drive, Scranton, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.
