Peter Tierney Obituary

Tierney, Peter George

Bluff Point: 68, of 3078 Esperanza Road, Bluff Point, died December 28th at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Rochester on September 10th, 1944, he was the son of the late Betsy Burke and Peter Tierney, both of Rochester. As a young man, he spent his summers at the family cottage on Seneca Lake in Dresden. He graduated from Monroe High School in Rochester and Union College in Schenectady. After graduation, he volunteered to join the United States Marine Corps, with active service in Vietnam. Injured in the line of duty, he retired as a 1st Lieutenant and returned to New York, marrying Sue Pola and settling in the Penn Yan area. He worked as Director of the Yates County Soil and Water Conservation District in the 1970s and early 1980s, before beginning a 30-year career in investments and financial planning. He was also the proprietor of The Bloomin' Lily, a business for designing, installing and supplying water gardens.

An avid supporter of the arts, he served on the board of PYTCo, and frequently lent a hand on productions over the years. He loved the Penn Yan community and was a loyal patron of many local businesses where he enjoyed meeting new friends and the company of neighbors.

He is survived by Sue Pola Tierney, his wife of 40 years; a son, Peter and his wife Veronica of Little Compton, RI; a daughter, Kimberly and her husband Hiroki Baba of Tokyo, Japan; his brother-in-law, Leo Pola of Bluff Point; an uncle, Thomas Burke and his wife Barbara of Bellona; and a wide extended family.

A private committal will be held at the family's discretion. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Peter's honor may be made to any charity or agency that benefits wounded and disabled veterans.

My sincere condolences to Pete's family. I spent a lot of time with Pete at Arrowhead Beach. My family had a cottage there, and I was there all summer from 1953 until 1964.
