After the war he became a Certified Public Accountant. He retired with 28 years of service with the U.S. General Accounting Office. Ray's wife, Glenna (Costlow) is deceased. Their two children are Dr. Ray D. Ruhrmund Jr., of New Carlisle, Ohio and Cheryl Haislar of Oxford, Ohio. Ray has 3 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Masons for over 75 years.

Looking back over the century, Ray, who enjoyed good health, due to daily exercise, said, "I was very fortunate that my parents took a great interest in the lives of their children. They taught us to be polite, respectful, thrifty, kind, and empathetic toward others. They also stressed the importance of a good education."
