Lucy van Limburg Stirum

MILLBROOK - Lucy Mary Caldwell van Limburg Stirum, born May 6, 1917 in Smyrna Georgia, daughter of Arthur Bunyan and Lucille Caldwell, and sister of Capt. Arthur N Caldwell and Lee F. Caldwell, passed away in Millbrook NY on February 10, 2013. Lucy married Count Wigbold van Limburg Stirum of Noordwijk, the Netherlands in New York City in 1943. For the past 60 years, Lucy and Wig made their home in Millbrook, NY with their three children Linda, Leopold "Frank," and Frans, all of whom have predeceased her. Lucy was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women and went on to work as a journalist in Washington D.C. before moving to New York and meeting the dashing Count at the Worlds Fair in 1940. Lucy and Wig were introduced there by another Millbrook resident, Mary Bagster Collins, Lucy's first cousin. Longtime vestry and altar guild member of Grace Church, she was very involved in the Millbrook community, lending her time to Meals on Wheels, the Fountains of Millbrook and local book clubs. Lucy and Wig circled the globe many times, including frequent trips to Holland, where Wig's family has deep roots. Lucy is survived by her daughters-in-law Susan and Carla, grandchildren Tristan, Marina and Tina, and her Dutch nephew Leopold van Limburg Stirum. Lucy cherished her loving care-givers Brenda, Alice, Kathleen, Kristin, Tarrah, Stacey, Marion and Sue, who were with her for many years. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Lucy's favorite charities: Grace Church, Dutchess Land Conservancy or Planned Parenthood. Funeral services will be held at Grace Church, Millbrook on Sunday February 17th at 2 pm. Interment will follow in Nine Partners Cemetery, Millbrook. Arrangements have been entrusted to Allen Funeral Home, Millbrook.
