To my Grandfather,
Some words of thanks and gratitude before we part.
Thank you for giving us your name,
and, even if not a name, then a heritage,
Not only a name and a heritage,
But a name and a heritage that we can take pride in,
And not only a name and a heritage to take pride in,
But a name and a heritage that reminds us
That there is something alive inside each one of us
That continually calls and challenges us
To become more than what we are at this moment.
Thank you...
For Christmas Eves
And raking leaves,
For crickets on the hearth,
Family parties in the yard,
For long talks lasting late into the night,
And for showing us how to do things right,
For many years lived as neighbors next door,
And many lingering goodbyes waved from your front door.
Thank you, thank you,
You invincible man.
May God lead you through this twilight of death,
So that you may wake up,
Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,
In the new light of a heavenly dawn.
