WIDER, Carol F. (Humphriss)
Carol F. (Humphriss) Wider of Newington passed away on Wednesday, (February 20, 2013) at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, but her unique story begins 87 years before in the small town of Somers, CT. On that December day in 1925, a remarkable spirit was born, giving the world a new "Christmas Carol". A bright and sunny child, she filled her summers at her family's cottage in picture perfect Lake Wyola, MA, a piece of heaven that would become a staple in her life and a legacy to future generations. At school in Easthampton, MA, teachers were proud to call her their student, for sweetness seemed to follow wherever she tread. Her eager mind earned her a graduate degree from Northampton Commercial College and her inner passion for excitement and life drew her to the bustle of The Big Apple, where she worked for Remington Rand while pursuing a modeling career. This girl was beautiful and people were starting to take notice, not the least of whom was a fiery young charmer named Arthur G. Wider, who would sweep her off her feet if only she would give him the chance. He was from Floral Park, Long Island, and an upperclassman at New York University. Their paths crossed one fateful Saturday afternoon in 1947 while swimming at "Point Lookout"— as good a place as any to kindle a romance. But she wouldn't make it easy for him. She was a catch and she knew it. Besides, she had principles, and her fair share of suitors. She rebuffed his initial advances thinking he might buzz off to the next summer fling, but the one thing she didn't count on was Art's will. The moment that incorrigible romantic laid eyes on her, destiny was in their cards. Though she didn't know it yet, he would not only win her for his bride, but bring immeasurable joy into her life, bless her four times over with wonderful, vibrant children, and care for her the entirety of their 64 years. So, in the end, as it should, persistence paid off. Carol succumbed and Arthur finally earned the triumph of his labor of love: a first date. In Carol's own words, "Imagine a year later on July 30th, 1948 we were engaged to be married." Indeed, three months later on October 16th, they were just so. It is a love that has weathered the test of time, as true as any, he her mast, and she his sail. When their ship finally came in, it moored in charming, family-friendly model of suburbia, Newington, CT. A bucolic raised ranch became their home for 60 years, bringing new experiences and expanded horizons: lifelong friendships at the Newington Jr. Women's Club, 40 years of weekly bridge sessions with her fellow Eddy Lane lady card-sharks, enriching employment at Norman Miller's Clothing Store, Hoyle Insurance Agency, and Whittaker & Sons, family escapes to the summer lake to share the joy of her idyllic, hidden treasure, countless vacations and trips with a yearly entourage of loving siblings who explored the world with her, endless doting on her children and grandchildren, merry-making at the Indian casinos, dancing and shopping in spades...this woman could dress. And Art supported her all the way with his self-made business, Connecticut Audio Visual Education Service, a 60-year state fixture still thriving. This adoring and adored wife, mother, sister, aunt, grand- and great grandmother is survived by her son, Dane W. Wider of Newington, three daughters Debora Wider of Shutesbury, MA, Kyla Vicino of Newington, Kim Matthews of N. Granby, seven grandchildren: Todd, Nicole, Ashley, Ryan, Harleigh, Garrett and Brody, three great grandchildren: Daniel, Brandon and Riley, her brothers Dale Humphriss of Santa Rosa, CA, Glenn Humphriss of Ft. Mohave, AZ, her sister Audrey Lindquist of Birmingham, Alabama, several nieces and nephews, and her predeceased granddaughter, Michelle. And of course, there is Arthur, her one and only, husband, lover, confidante, cherished best friend, soul mate, occasional court jester, and foremost keeper.
With respect for his dearly beloved, Carol's funeral service and burial will be held privately. Please celebrate Carol's momentous life and keep the love story going by sharing a memory at www.newingtonmemorial.com.

Kyla,
This was such a thoughtful and beautiful tribute to your mom. There were many things I didn't know about her and other things that didn't surprise me. She was truly a lady of grace and the love that she had for you and your family was palpable. She was always such a lady. I'm sorry for your loss - you and your family are in my heart, my thoughts and prayers.
Love,

Dear Wider family,
I remember visiting Art and Carol growing up as a teenager in CT. We used to have some great family tag sales! I even remember drinking coffee for the very first time at their house. Carol was always a very warm and gracious hostess. God blessed her with a long and beautiful life and a wonderful family to share it with! My heart goes out to all of you especially to Art - may God give you peace. Thinking of you all <3

Dearest Kyla and family: my prayers are with you all. Your Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, and beautiful Wife was indeed a magnificent spirit. We (your elementary, jr high, and high school girlfriends) loved being around her; as she was the kind of parents we could talk to knowing we'd receive sage advice and loving guidance. You, Debbie, and Kim all have her twinkling eyes and wonderful spirit. She is inside each and every one of you. I know no memory will replace her physical presence, but I pray that those memories will ease your sorrow. May she rest in peace and may our condolences bring you comfort.

Good night my sweet mom...We will be talking every night in my prayers, while you lovingly watch over us. You waited to meet your adorable great grand-daughter and then it was time to go...you slipped away from us in the middle of the night, never having a chance to say our good-byes...I miss you already but know you are not too far away... Your adoring daughter...Kyla
