OQUAWKA - Fred Dixon, Oquawka, left the stage Tuesday, March 5, 2013. His life was like a great book, or a song that you can't get out of your head. It began in Burlington, Iowa on Nov. 11, 1937. He was the firstborn child of Roy and Lily Dixon. Legend has it that he was born with a guitar in his hand. That probably isn't true ... although the doctor said his first cry of life was in perfect pitch. After graduating from East Aurora High School he joined the Navy and met the love of his life, Aggie Boge. They had known each other for three weeks when they ran off into the night and eloped. The Navy didn't have much of a sense of humor about that, so they did it again in front of a Navy chaplain. That was 56 years ago on Dec. 27th.
He loved kids, dogs, books, poetry, jokes, and, of course, music. Fred worked construction most of his life. He was dedicated to his church and was an active member of the Oquawka Masonic Lodge 123 AF&AM.
His mom, dad, and little brother, Gary, went before him. Those who stayed behind include his wife, Aggie; six kids, Roy (Tena), Brian (Bonnie), Ron (Karen), Pam (Ron Nelson), Bobby, and Tim (Anne); his brother and sisters, Arline Munson, Mike (Leona), and Tamyra (Doug) Rankin; 10 grandchildren; eight and a half great-grandchildren; many other relatives; and all of his many, many friends.
A public Masonic Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, followed by a service celebrating Fred's life. Following the service there will be a luncheon at the Oquawka United Methodist Church. Ashes will be interred at a later date in the Oquawka Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established.
