Ralph W. Steffen
September 20, 1927 - March 29, 2013
SILVERTON - Ralph W. Steffen was born on September 20, 1927, the fourth child of Daniel and Linda (Leisy) Steffen and passed away on March 29, 2013 in Silverton, Oregon after a short illness. He spent his early days on the family farm in the Central Howell area. After graduating from Silverton High School he enlisted in the Navy, near the end of WWII, and spent two years as an airplane mechanic. After his discharge he returned to the Silverton area where he met and later married Jacqueline June Smith on August 7, 1948. They celebrated 59 years together and raised eight children and at times some of their grandchildren.
Ralph's working days were spent driving trucks. Early on it was log trucks in the Tillamook area. Then hauling wood chips between Idanha and Redmond. His big rig driving days ended on his 65th birthday when he retired from Boise Cascade after delivering paper products for the container plant more than 30 years.
Ralph was a charter member of the Silverton Elks Lodge.
Ralph is survived by his children Roni (Jerry Harrold), Jeffrey, Mitchell, Jack (Cindy), Shane, Jeannie Cox (Dave), and Jan Steffen; twenty three grandchildren; eleven great-grand children; brothers Wayne (Doryce) and Stanley (Ruthie); sisters Rita Sparks, Phyllis Pilcher (Tom); sister and brother-in-law Sandie and Dick Overfield; brother and sister-in-law Fred and Doris Smith; sister-in-law Irene Steffen and his special friend at the Davenport House, Wendell Seastrom. He was preceded in death by his wife Jackie, his son Victor, brother Don, and sister Joyce Dickinson.
Visiatation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. A memorial service is planned for 1:00 pm Friday, April 12, 2013 at Emmanuel Bible Church, 8512 Sunnyview NE, Salem, OR.
Contributions in Ralph's name can be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice or the Davenport House in Silverton, OR.
