Mary Lou (O'Neal) Grindy
1933 - 2013
Mary Lou (O'Neal) Grindy died in Lincoln on May 16, 2013, at age 79. Born in Marshall, Arkansas, in 1933, to Alva and McKinley O'Neal, Mary was the youngest of six children, now deceased: brothers Grant, Bryce, and Bruce O'Neal and twin sister Carol Sue Mackey.
After graduating from Marshall High School in 1950, Mary attended Arkansas State Teacher's College before moving in 1954 to Pioneer, California, where she taught kindergarten and 7th and 8th grade English. She married John Grindy of Plymouth in 1956.
After earning her BA in 1974 from California State University, Sacramento, Mary taught kindergarten and 3rd grade at Sutter Creek Elementary School until her retirement in 1993.
Since moving to Placer County in 1991, Mary enjoyed cooking big family meals, watching her grandchildren in sports, gardening, and rooting for the Giants and 49ers. Her hobby was crocheting afghans and scarves for friends and family and local craft fairs. She will be remembered and missed most dearly for her loving care and devotion to her family, who were always the center of her heart and life.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John Grindy of Lincoln; daughter Jennifer Hermon and her husband Brian of Dixon; son Tim Grindy and his wife Michele of Roseville; and son Robert Grindy and his wife Rosemarie of Decatur, Illinois; sisters-in-law Joyce O'Neal, Doris O'Neal, and Lucille O'Neal; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family gives special thanks to the staff of The Villa Residential Care Home in Lincoln and Sutter Hospice for their kindness and care.
Internment will be at Sunset View Cemetery in Jackson. Memorial contributions may be made to Sutter Creek Primary School Library, 10 Broad Street, Sutter Creek, CA 95685. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.danerimortuary.com and signing the guest book.
