Earl Powell Obituary

Long time resident of Winchester Earl N. Powell (15th April 1940) passed away on May 7, 2013, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Jan and the very proud and loving father of Ben and Eric (sons of Consuelo Powell, deceased). Earl is pre-deceased by brothers Edward and Walter Powell and is survived by his sister Nancy Dingman, her husband Robert, his sister-in-law Peggy Powell, Ben's partner Julie Ritz and many loving nieces and nephews. Earl was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1940 the third child of Edward and Millicent Powell. When he was three months old the family moved to Arizona. From here Earl moved steadily eastwards via New Mexico, Illinois, Wisconsin and eventually Massachusetts. Earl served in the US Navy from 1958 - 1962. He was a member of the Seminole Skydiving Team and undertook over 90 parachute jumps. He gained a BFA in industrial Design at University of Illinois, 1967 and an MFA in painting at the University of Wisconsin, 1971. He described his career path as 'spotty', which is a testament to his unpretentious demeanor. Earl arrived in Boston in the early 1970s, and pursued his painting career. His work adorns various collections including the permanent collection of Harvard's Fogg Museum, Cambridge. During the years in which his sons attended Winchester public schools, Earl was active as board member of the Winchester Friends of Art. In more recent years he had booths at Winchester's Town day and the Farmers' Market. He also exhibited his wooden objects with the Winchester Artists Network annual show, held at Winchester Public Library. He was an artist, teacher, mentor and a leader in Design Management. In 2001 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Westminster, London. His Presidency at The Design Management Institute spanned two decades and in 2008 was elected by the DMI to receive the title of Life Fellow, its highest honor. In 'retirement' he became a woodworker extraordinaire. In 2008 he graduated from the North Bennett Street school two-year Cabinet and Furniture Making program. His thirst for knowledge and desire to excel took him to many workshops, conferences and symposiums throughout the nation, making friends wherever he went. Woodwork became his passion. He was a member of The Furniture Society, Woodworkers Guild, Lexington Art and Craft Society, the Association of Revolutionary Turners, The American Association of Woodturners and Central New England Wood Turners. From 2008 - 2011 he was a Trustee of The Society of Arts and Craft. Earl has exhibited work at the Fullercraft museum and his teapot "Keep On Truckin' can be viewed in 'Across the Grain' now through September 22nd 2013. In a fitting tribute, the Center for Art in Wood, Philadelphia, has named the archival files of artist's information The Earl Powell Artists Research Files. Earl will be sorely missed but his creative spirit lives on in the many fine, whimsical objects he made. A wonderful legacy of an amazing man. A Remembrance Tea Party will be held at the family home on June 15th 2 - 6pm with a formal tribute starting at 3pm. Earl was a strong, kind man. It was my pleasure to know him. He was a rock for me when myself and family needed him. He deeply loved Jan and Ben and Eric.
