EASTON - Warren Donald Smith of McGowan Road in Easton, Washington County, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was 80.
Born Dec. 27, 1932, in Schaghticoke, he was the son of the late Warren P. and Mary E. (Lord) Smith.
A Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy, Warren proudly served from 1951 to 1954, earning the National Defense Service Medal and Korean Occupation Service Medal.
He was employed by the former Norton Co. in Watervliet and a communicant of Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Ballston Spa.
He was a member of the Northeast Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association, a life member of the Valley Falls VFW Post 1938 and a 30-year member of American Legion Post 1498 in Halfmoon.
He was a past N.R.A. hunting instructor and a charter member of the Moonshine Hunting Club in Long Lake. He had many successful hunts and always came home with the meat and trophies to prove it. Warren enjoyed many successful hunts in Newfoundland, Canada, with Sam Caine and Sons Wilderness Outfitters and many of his trips were to Carrollton, Ohio, for turkey and deer with his son Matt and grandson Jimmy.
Known as the "Scrapman," he knew his metals and their values and also dealt with buying and selling cattle with longtime friend Murrey Moore. Warren always said, "Work hard and hang on to your money."
Warren and his wife, Helen, enjoyed winters in Myrtle Beach at Golf Colony Resort, where they would visit their many friends. His greatest joy in life was his five children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was proud of his family and their way of life.
Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Yurschak of Schaghticoke; their children, Jennifer (Daniel) Sweeney of Fayetteville, N.C., Daniel J. (Mary Anne Richard) Smith of Cambridge, Georgia M. (Wayne) Gregory of Pemberton, N.J., Virginia Vredenburg of Schaghticoke and Matthew (Tammy) Smith of Carrollton, Ohio; his siblings, Edward (Patricia) Smith of Schaghticoke, Richard (Florence) Smith of Schaghticoke, Mrs. Doris Russom of Stillwater, Mary Ellen Slezak of Amsterdam and Lois (Ed) Vadnansky of Schuylerville; his sister-in-law, Barbara Smith, also of Schaghticoke; his grandchildren, Richard Pettigrew Jr., Jason Sweeney, Daniel Smith Jr., Joanna Smith, Leandra Smith, Alaska Rivera, Bobbette Douglas, Timothy Vredenburg, Amber Vredenburg and James Warren Smith; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and dear friend Mike Nash and sister, Marion.
He was predeceased by his brother, Leon Smith, and his brother-in-law, Alex Russom.
Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main St., Schaghticoke, where the Memory Eternal Prayer will be honored. A funeral service will be conducted at noon at the funeral home.
Burial with military honors will be at Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio; Carroll County Visiting Nurses of Carrollton, Ohio; and the staff at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.
