On Tuesday morning, June 25, 2013, our hearts were saddened when God stretched out his arms and welcomed another one of his angels home, Helen Goodwyn Hughes.
Helen Goodwyn Hughes, 90, of 13211 Hines Road, Disputanta, departed this life in the comfort of her home. She was born Sept. 23, 1922, to the late Richard Goodwyn Sr. and Fannie Johnson Goodwyn of Disputanta.
She joined First Baptist Church, Disputanta, at an early age and she sang in the choir. She graduated from Disputanta Training School and move to Newport News, where she joined First Baptist Church Newport News and sang in the gospel chorus. While in Newport News, she met and married the late Melvin Hughes Sr. She later returned back to Disputanta and reunited with First Baptist Church of Disputanta. She was employed by Col. And Mrs. Frank Wallace.
Helen was the last surviving child of the late Richard Goodwyn and Fannie Johnson Goodwyn. The siblings preceding her were: brothers, Sylvester Goodwyn, Daniel Goodwyn, Albert Lee Goodwyn, Lewis Goodwyn, David Goodwyn, Deacon Richard Alexander Goodwyn; and sister, Lucy Hamlin.
Niece and Nephews preceding her were: Constance Jones, Deacon Dan Goodwyn, Lee Lawrence Goodwyn, Bennie Goodwyn and Harold Goodwyn.
Grandchildren preceding her were: Helena Hughes and Reginald Hughes.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her devoted son, Melvin Hughes Jr. of the home; daughter-in-law, Mary Hughes of Pa.; grandchildren, Melvin "Bernard" Hughes (Kim) of Pa., and Kevin White (Veronica) of Prince George; great-grandchildren, Lakisha Lewis, Kevin White Jr., Reginald Hughes Jr. and Kristina Hughes of Pa.; devoted nephew, Lewis Goodwyn Jr. (Ethel); sister-in-law, Viola Goodwyn; devoted friends (like family), Frank Wallace Jr. and Leslie Wallace Clements (Dana); and a host of other relatives; and friends.
The immediate family will assemble one hour prior to service at the residence. Family may be contacted at 804-991-2274, Lucille Turner, niece; or 804-991-2005, Melvin Hughes, Jr., son. Family and friends will assemble at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Disputanta; the Dr. J. Alfred Reid, pastor, will officiate. The interment to follow in the church cemetery.
