SHELBURNE - Roy H. Goldthwaite Jr., 80, of 314 Little Mohawk Road, Shelburne died Tuesday, August 13, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born in Greenfield, July 24, 1933, the son of Roy H and Katherine Persis (Graves) Goldthwaite.

Roy worked on the family farm in Shelburne when in earlier years the family also enjoyed sugaring in the spring - in spite of all the hard work! He was also a third generation water dowser.
In the 1960's Roy and his brother Bob owned a well and septic system business. In 1968 he helped organize the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department. During the 1970's he served first as an assistant deputy chief and later as deputy chief. He was very proud to be a member of the fire department.
He enjoyed motorcycles and snowmobiling. He often referred to himself as a 'backyard mechanic".
As many people can attest to he had a wealth of knowledge of local history.
Survivors include his brother Richard A. of Shelburne and sisters Katherine M. Ainsworth of Greenfield, Beverly A. Williams of Ashfield, Arlene E. Patenaude of Shelburne and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Robert.

An appreciation response:
Your father was an exceptional individual. He was a fantastic dowser and your maple syrup was exceptional. You dug a trench from across our yard to house, laid pipe, dug 'n' put in tiles for a spring capable of 100 gallons per minute for $240. I thank you for being a good neighbor.
