Donald Marlatt Obituary

HORNELL - Donald R. "Don" Marlatt, 80, of 81 North Church St., Hornell, died unexpectedly Thursday evening (Sept. 19, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital, where he had been taken by city ambulance after being stricken at home.

Born in Canisteo on Sept. 8, 1933, he was the son of Elwin and Rachel (Burchard) Marlatt.

Don grew up in Canisteo and attended Canisteo Central School. He later served his country as a member of the US Air Force.

A resident of Hornell for most of his adult life, Don served several years as a firefighter for the Hornell Fire Department. He worked for several years at the former Marion Rohr Corporation and for 22 years was employed at Foster-Wheeler Corporation in Dansville, retiring in 1995 as a clerk.

Don had a deep love of sports and was a diehard NY Yankee fan. He also loved rooting for the New York Giants Football Team and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Don also love watching golf and pulling for his favorite player, Tiger Woods.

For many years Don served as a coach in the Hornell Little League Baseball League and the Hornell Babe Ruth Baseball League. He also enjoyed umpiring in many leagues throughout the area.

Don was married on July 23, 1960, to the former Carol Petrilli, who died July 12, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Clayton Marlatt.

Surviving are his son, Michael J. Marlatt of Hornell; 1 brother, Charles (Shirley) Marlatt of Canisteo; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Christine Petrilli; sister-in-law, Sheila Marlatt; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Don's request, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, N.Y., with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.

Don's family request that memorial contributions in his name be made to: St. Jude Children's Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dep't 300, Memphis, TN 38148.

In honor of Don's military service, the American Flag will be flown at half-staff at the Dagon Funeral Home.
