Sam L. Melendrez, 86, resident of Deming and a former resident of Las Cruces passed away Sunday Sept. 22, 2013 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be this Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at 10:00 in the morning at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ernie Vineyard, Pastor officiating. Concluding services and interment with honors will be that afternoon at 2 p.m. at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place. Sam was born Feb. 13, 1927 in Dona Ana, N.M. to Samuel and Erminia Ledesma Melendrez. He honorably served his country in the United States Army in World War II and during the Korean Conflict. Afterward he worked for many years as an agricultural equipment salesman here in the southwest until his retirement. In Las Cruces, Sam was a member of the Dona Ana Sheriff's Posse and in his spare time he enjoyed lapidary, gardening, hunting and working with his horses. He and his wife came to Deming about 10 years ago and locally Sam was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed spending time with his large family, telling stories, and drinking coffee with his 9 o'clock coffee group. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Beatriz Miranda Melendrez of the home; his children: Samuel Patrick Melendrez (Nina) of Las Vegas, N.M.; Imelda Veeder (Elmer) of Deming; Claudia Melendrez-Rel (Ed) of Albuquerque; Michael Melendrez (Kari) of Los Lunas; Faviola Martinez (Manuel) of Pojoaque, N.M.; Mercedes McFerrin (Rick) of Burleson, Texas, Regina Goldhirsch (Mark) of Gilbert, Ariz.; Lydia Zerwekh (John) of Parker, Colo.; 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; sisters: Erma, Viola, Leah and Leva; brothers: Demetrio and David; many loving nieces, nephews, sisters in law, and brothers in law. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, M.J. "Buddy" Melendrez and one sister, Norma Louise Stewart. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Mimbres Crematory.
