Charles Clark Obituary

Charles Robert Clark, 90, passed away October 9, 2013 at his home in Canon City surrounded by family and his loving wife, Pat Charlie was born October 1, 1923 to Rosa Letha and Robert Melvin Clark in Chickasha, Okla. He spent his childhood there helping to support his family after his father died at an early age. After graduating from high school, he entered business school to learn as much as he could before joining the service during World War II. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946 in Scotland, London and North Africa. His business skills paid off as he worked in headquarters processing orders and later escorting German prisoners of war from North Africa. He returned home like so many members of the "Greatest Generation" ready to live life to the fullest, work hard, and start a family. He met the love of his life, Patsy Ruth Lowe, and they married March 19, 1948. At the time of his death, they were married 65 years. Together they raised and loved four children; Dr. Mel (Mary Bee) Clark of Oklahoma City; Melanie (Mac) Jones, La Junta; Nancy (Sonny) Smaller, Canon City; and Dianne Clark who proceeded him in death in 1975. He loved his family. He was the best father, grandfather, and great-grandfather in the world always teaching by example. He was a strong source of love, support and faith. Charlie was dedicated to community journalism. From selling papers on the street corner at age 12, to working as an advertising manager after the war, and finally owning and publishing his own newspaper in Las Animas, Colo. for 18 years. As the publisher of the Bent County Democrat, he was a fixture in the Las Animas community. Charlie was always there with his notepad and camera covering city council, school board and high school sports. In addition, he wrote a weekly editorial called "Charlie's Chatter." He mentored many high school students interested in journalism and provided the first job for numerous college journalism graduates. Editorially and individually he was instrumental in securing a permanent pool and park at John Martin Reservoir, a major Las Animas water project, a city museum and a state prison. He was named Colorado Newsperson of the Year in 1985 by the Colorado Press Association. He served his community well through church and service organizations. He was president of the Las Animas Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, was a city councilman and elder in the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Patsy and three children; grandchildren Emily (Josh) Payne, Oklahoma City; Bry (Katie) Jones, La Junta; Brad (Corrie) Jones, La Junta; Aaron (Rachel) Minor, Denver; Paul Minor, Canon City; great-grandchildren Ryan Jones, Wyatt Jones, Charly Jones, Cassidy Jones, Cooper Jones, and Mason Payne. He was preceded in death by his sister Louise Horn and brother Billy "Red" Clark. Viewing will be Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 9:30 am followed by funeral services at 10 am at the United Presbyterian Church, 701 Macon Avenue, Canon City. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 pm at the Las Animas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Fremont Regional Hospice, 1439 Main St., Canon City. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.wilsonfuneralhome.org
