Charles Emanuelson Obituary

Charles Emanuelson

Norfolk - Charles William Emanuelson, of Scottsville, Virginia, passed away on November 4, 2013. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 25, 1923, the only child of Edward Francis Emanuelson and Mildred Truitt Bailie Emanuelson. Bill attended both public and parochial schools in Norfolk. In the eighth grade, he continued his education at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. Upon graduation, he enrolled in The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying engineering. In World War II, Bill volunteered for service in the United States Navy and was trained as a pilot. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters, the latter with the United States Marine Corps flying F4U Corsairs.

Bill married Margaret Ann Sells of Atlanta. When Bill first spied Margaret across the room at a party in Chapel Hill, he said to his very best friend, "That is the girl I am going to marry." He did just that in May 1945 in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City upon returning from combat duties. Bill and Margaret moved to Virginia Beach in 1946 where they raised their five children. In the mid-1980's they moved to Point Harbor, North Carolina, and in 1994, Bill and Margaret relocated to southern Albemarle County.

Bill loved aviation and after the war continued his flying, owning a variety of aircraft through the years. Bill also enjoyed auto racing and instilled the same in his two sons. Bill was an industrialist owning a plastics corporation in Norfolk for many years. His company was instrumental in fabricating many complex items for NASA and for the nuclear submarine fleet. His company also worked closely with Dow Chemical Company and other major companies on the East Coast. After retirement, he started a marine construction business with his son on the Outer Banks of North Carolina entitled Jeff K. Emanuelson & Dad, of which his son, Jeff, is President. Bill was a member of The Order of St. Luke the Physician. He was a founding member of the Man Will Never Fly Society and a past Director of the First Flight Society. He supported the construction of a replica of the original Wright Flyer for the 2003 100th Anniversary celebration in Kitty Hawk. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (the love and light of his life) in June 2013. Bill is survived by a daughter, Laura Margaret E. Carter and her husband, Dr. Bruce Thomas Carter; a son, Charles William Emanuelson Jr.; a daughter, Belford Camilla Louise E. Martin and her husband, Timothy Tabor Martin; and a son, Jefferson Kimbrough Sells Emanuelson. Bill was preceded in death by a daughter, Roma Bailie E. Bray, and her husband, Charles Edward Bray, III, both of whom died in an airplane accident in 1984; and a son-in-law, Dr. Ronald Ross Peters, who died in 1995. He is survived by four grandchildren: Dr. Barrett William Ross Peters and his wife, Mary Katherine Trible Peters; Courtland Donald Truitt Peters; Jacob Corbin Hunter Martin; and Mariah Emily Anne Martin. Bill is also survived by two great-grandchildren: Lochlan Trible Ross Peters and Truitt Dunaway West Peters. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the incredibly wonderful and caring staff at RoseWood Village on Greenbrier Drive. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice of the Piedmont, and to the nurses in the Palliative Care Unit, Third Floor East, at The University of Virginia Medical Center. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 401 Alderman Road, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903, with Fr. Stephen Alcott officiating on Tuesday, November 12, at 6:15 p.m. There will be a private interment at a later date. Also, there will be a memorial service at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church, 4212 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Nag's Head, North Carolina 27959, with The Rev. Phillip R.
