Richard Toner Obituary

Colonel (Retired) Richard Dick Barcus Toner Colonel (Retired) Richard Dick Barcus Toner, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on 10 November 2013, of natural causes. Dick was married to Connie Platis on 1 September 1956; they were married for 57 years. He grew up in Wilmington, Delaware where he played football for, and joined the Navy after graduating from, Wilmington High School. After serving for five years as a sailor in the Navy, Dick received an athletic scholarship to Utah State University where he played football and was commissioned as a Regular Army Infantry Lieutenant after graduation in 1956. Dick served his Nation for 27 years including one tour of duty in both Korea and Ethiopia, and two tours in Vietnam. Among his numerous awards and decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Army Commendation medal for Valor, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Silver Star and Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, and Vietnamese Ranger Badge. After retiring from the Army in 1978, he served as Vice President of Highway Oil Company in Topeka until he retired in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Connie, son John Toner and his wife Kristen, son Colonel Chris Toner and his wife Jenny, and three grandsons John, Zachery, and Joshua. A private family service with military honors will be held at the Desoto Baptist Church on Friday, 15 November. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or to the Midland Care Hospice at www.midlandcare.org. I didn´t know Dickie passed. Frank passed too young in 1992.
My middle daughter is writing this for me, Connie & Children. Frank left a journal from age 10- on. Dickie & his squirrel hunting & their secret hunting spots were stories we treasured. I remember cooking for Dick when he´d come home before he married. Our condolences & Im so sorry for your loss. Margaret Zinni for my Mother, Ann Zinni. I am on FB if you are interested. My mom is 91 & wanted your mother to know she didn´t know he passed. Dickie stood up for my Dad at their Wedding & visited us in 1968. I was 13. I still recall that Dela day Regards- 954-826-3848. I was saddened to hear the Dick had passed. He was an amazing man. I worked with him at Highway Oil for 20 years. He will be missed by all who knew him.
