DOROTHY CONNOR Obituary

Connor, Dorothy
Passed away on August 30, 2013, at 92, of congestive heart failure. She was a devoted teacher of English and philosophy, loved and admired both her students and her colleagues. After graduate work at the Catholic University in Washington, DC she taught one year at Howard University, five years at Mount St. Mary's College and eighteen years at Boston State College. She was known for being not just smart but wise and generous. She cajoled her colleagues to send their stories and plays out to magazines and theaters; she read their works and saw their plays not just once, but several times. One student praised her for being "truly honest, sensitive and fine". Another wrote, "this class has been so unlike all previous classes that it has inspired me to stick with English and complete my education". Dorothy loved to travel, especially on the old ocean liners. She spent summers in Paris and Oxford, where she took a course in 20th century literature and politics. She also liked shorter trips to the New England Countryside and frequently drove friends on trips to Concord for brunch or Essex for clams and browsing in antique stores. She was a true "Massachusetts liberal", who particularly disliked "society's snap decisions… the easy, brainless and popular". Friends always sought her advice on whom to vote for in local elections. Dorothy was passionate about global and national politics, but she was never doctrinaire. Everything was leavened by her lovely sense of humor. Among the items mentioned in her "Things I Hate" list were "playing cards… praying… jogging… being 'included'… The Reader's Digest… huge portions… nutritionists… tour guides… new agers… and Republicans". Dorothy Connor lived her last twelve years at the Susan Bailis Assisted Living Community in Boston with her beloved cat Nicky. She was predeceased by her parents whom she lovingly tended in their old age, her brother and her niece, Jean Marie Connor. She is survived by her niece, Cathy D. Connor and her nephews, Raymond James Connor, III and Jeffrey B. Connor.
