I worked for Al in the mid-90s. I cannot find adequate words to express how sad I am that he has died. We remained friendly and as recently as last month he wrote me a lovely email after learning of my plans to retire from Alcatel-Lucent; it was helpful and his wonderful sense of humor ran through it. I will miss him.
