Kenneth Alwine Obituary

HANOVER Kenneth James Alwine, 59, entered into God's eternal care Saturday, November 30, 2013, at York Hospital, with his loving family and friends by his side. Ken was the loving husband of Lois J. (Boyer) Alwine whom he shared 36 happy years of marriage. Born June 16, 1954, in Hanover, he was the son of Evelene (Klunk) Alwine of Hanover and the late Clair M. Alwine. Mr. Alwine was a 1972 graduate of South Western High School and received his degree in Physics Secondary Education from Shippensburg University in 1976. Ken taught at William Penn High School for three semesters before teaching at Susquehannock High School for 33 years. In his classroom, Mr. Alwine was known for coining some interesting and humorous phrases, such as "What part of NO don't you understand, You gotta ask yourself, Self why did I do that?, That's close enough for the government on a Thursday, and It's all in the genes and I'm not talking about the ones you're wearing." And he would be the first to tell you "Physics is everywhere." He retired following the 2011 school year. Ken was born to be an educator. Retirement didn't stop him from helping others succeed in their education. Education wasn't his job, it was his life and he had a full life. In addition to teaching, Ken spent 24 years as a football and track and field coach. He touched so many young lives throughout his tenure. Some of his favorite times were spent attending Penn State and Baltimore Ravens football games, where he could be heard coaching from his seat in the stands. Ken was also an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. He was an active member of the West Manheim Hunting Camp in Potter County, the National Rifle Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Jefferson Sportsman Club, the Republican Club of Hanover and the North American Hunting Club. In addition to his wife and mother, Ken is survived by two sons, Brian C. Alwine of Hanover, and Eric M. Alwine and his wife Maria of Shrewsbury; one granddaughter, Natalie C. Alwine; a sister, Judith Alwine of York; and a brother, Edward Alwine of Hanover; and six nephews and five nieces, as well as eight great nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Milcoff. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013 at St. Paul's Dubs Church, 1958 Dubs Church Road, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. Craig Lantz officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2013 and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the church. Burial will take place at Rest Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ken may be made to The Southern York County School District Foundation c/o the Kenneth J. Alwine Scholarship Fund, 3280 Fissel's Church Road, Glen Rock, PA 17327. The Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, PA has been entrusted by the family with the funeral arrangements. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.kenworthyfh.com

Mr. Alwine was great physics teacher and football coach. The lessons I learned from him both in the classroom and on the field stick with me today. My favorite of his sayings was "if you didn't get that answer then you better try the other end of the pencil". He will be missed.

There are few people in this world that somehow make your life better just because you had the fortune of knowing them. Ken Alwine will be remembered fondly as a friend, a co-worker, a teacher, a hunting buddy, a coach, a father, and just an all-around great guy. If I had to come up with one word to summarize the Ken I have come to know over the last 30 years, it would have to be passionate. He was passionate about everything he did. The world lost a good one! The way he fought his medical condition was typical of the way he lead his life -- heads up and a never give up attitude. Always positive! "Bet the house on it!" A truly sad day! Thoughts and prayers to the family.

December 6, 2013

Lois, I am truly sad to hear this hard news, and my wife and I offer our deepest condolences. Kenny was a great friend in high school, and it was so good crossing paths on occasion at reunions. I will never forget him, and all the tributes here are an indication that many admired him. Wow - you must be so proud of him. I'm glad to have known him, and honored that we were friends. May God's peace be with you in this difficult time.

I worked with Ken at SHS for 9 years. He was an inspiring teacher who challenged his students to think outside the box. He was always very willing to help any student and many days he either stayed late or came in early to offer his assistance. I also attended many a Penn State tailgate that he hosted. I can still hear him saying, "Eat up folks. There is plenty of food." He was a generous and kind person. I will miss him terribly. Rest in peace friend.

I was just thinking of KA as we were preparing for Thanksgiving break. I was telling my current students how in PA we used to have the Monday after Thanksgiving off for the first day of deer season. Then I told them how KA would bring in the dehydrator and make deer jerky in the prep room! Such fond memories. Kenny was a fabulous teacher, friend and mentor. I started my teaching career with him looking out for me and knew if I ever needed anything at all that he was there for me. His wisdom and friendship will be missed but each of us are better having spent time with him.

It's hard to fathom the seemingly infinite amount of impact one person can have on so many, just by sharing so much of himself. Mr. Alwine would probably have a great way of explaining the formula.

Mr. Alwine was a true example to me as I went through high school. He always had a sense of purpose about him, which I took with me into my life. He was an inspiring teacher, motivational coach, and friend to me as we worked together in the summers painting horse barns and fences. Thoughts and prayers go out the Alwine family and know that Ken touched and continues to touch lives in the thousands that he taught. - Class of 1987

I am reading all the beautiful comments Ken's students/co-workers and friends have posted and it brings a sad smile to my face. Ken was always there when Tony had his stroke 2 years ago, now it's his time to smile down from heaven. Family is what the Boyer's and Alwine's thrived on. He is and always will be a very special person to Tony and I. Lois-Brian and Eric, we pray the knowing your dad is at peace will make this horrible time a little less painful.

Ken and I were friends for 36 years. We taught, coached, and attended football games @ University of Conn., Penn State, and Maryland. He always had good statistics about any sport. Ken demanded the best out of kids in the classroom and on the field. With students Ken's discipline was tough...now as adults, they thank him. I will miss the man that I loved as a brother. We shared many simple things in life such as eating hot dogs and soup in the "Goosemobile" while hunting. Heroes can carry fire hoses or rifles to defend our country, but Ken carried a wealth of knowledge that impacted many many students for the rest of their lives. A TRUE AMERICAN HERO! Coach Gerba

Mr. Alwine was one of the greatest and most respected teachers I've ever had. He was always willing to come in early or stay after to give one-on-one help, which demonstrated his dedication to this students. His standards were high, and he did everything he could to help us meet those standards. I'm very fortunate to have been his student. I'll never forget him.

I just thought of Mr. Alwine this past weekend when I answered my husband's cooking question with, "Close enough for the government!" My Facebook news feed is currently full of tributes to him by other Suskie alumni--a testament to the positive and lasting impression he made on so many people. My sincere condolences to the Alwine family.

To the Alwine Family my thoughts and prayers go out to you. What a wonderful legacy Mr. A has left a husband, father, coach, teacher, friend, and so much more. As I read over these beautiful words of family and friends, I was looking where they were coming from, all over the US. It was amazing to see how many people were touched in 59 years of life. Thanks for the laughs, encouragement, and the friendship. We will see you soon.

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Alwine in the late 80's along with a lot of my friends. His sayings are used still today along with others. He made me want to excel and constantly do better. He had a way of "making" you learn, even when you didn't think you could.
He will be greatly missed. I was deeply sanded when I heard the news. I haven't been right since. My best to his family. I hope all of these positive comments and memories help you as you try to get through this.

December 3, 2013

Mr. Alwine was the first teacher I ever had who pushed me to think outside the box. He encouraged me to reach my full potential, and really showed me the power of my own mind. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him. He was a great teacher.

I had Mr. Alwine in the early 90's for Physics and Track. Some people just have a presence in life, they make you want to be the best. He was that man. A strong, kind, positive role model for everyone... A competent hard working teacher.... and a motivating strong coach. I can't imagine the loss you feel right now or the void this will leave in your family, but who he is lives on in countless men and women and their children. He was a blessing to all who met him. May God bless you and care for you in your grief.

December 3, 2013

I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Alwine's passing and my deepest condolences go out to his family and close friends. I was really lucky that I had the chance to call him Mr. Alwine and Coach during my time at Susquehannock. His enthusiasm and excitement for teaching was so contagious. Whether it was fighting my way through one of his famous physics tests or fighting my way up one more hill during practice, he taught you that hard work and perseverance will pay off in the end. It sounds cliche but it really was a great life lesson that you never really appreciate at the time. In hindsight all I can say is, thanks Coach. You were one of a kind and will be truly missed.

December 3, 2013

I never met Mr. Alwaine or even went to his school. I was just reading the guest book and he sounds like a awesome man whom I wish I had the pleasure of meeting. Sounds like he will live on forever with his funny sayings that his students now use on their own children. It seems he has touched many many people in his time. So sorry for your loss and I am sure he will forever be remembered.

December 3, 2013

My deepest condolences to Alwine family for their loss. It may be anecdotal to note that the way Mr. Alwine taught mechanics and electronics has never failed me in all my future years of studying engineering. He was a great and a compassionate man.

"Mr. A" was the embodiment of what a "teacher" should be... and part of the reason I became one! His humor, his sayings (which I have used in my own classrooms) and consistency (and motivation to do better than you thought you could - he made us want to live up to his high expectations) is what made going to his class so enjoyable! I am sad to hear of his passing and am sending up prayers for his family. He was one of the greats!

On a more personal note - Ken: it is unbelievable that we have now needed to say goodbye. A very special friend and family member of our "card club." Sharing years together from our graduations, weddings, births and the raising of our children, to their graduations, weddings and yes the grandchildren. Many good times from the "enticing" conversations to camping, cookouts, ballgames, outings to-dinner, vacations, holidays, Christmas shopping rendezvous and the many events with our children. Oh I almost forgot the occasional game of cards! We had many more plans to accomplish but God saw it differently. The laughter shared as well as the tears, provided all 8 of us many memories to cherish and a bond beyond compare. You leave behind a wonderful family. As you would have wanted, the "card club group" will continue to endure. With all our love and prayers,

Mr. Alwine was one of the most important men in my life. He was caring, inspirational, funny, smart, and just an overall great guy. He always reminded me to focus on things that I can change, rather than those I can't. For example, when it was raining or cold at a meet or practice, there was no point in complaining because none of us can change the weather. Now my technique in the circle or runway, I can change that. I use that same idea today in all that I do. I will miss him so much, I am sad that I was unable to see him in the hospital, but I am glad that the last time I saw him was at a track meet and I gave him a big hug. The Alwine family will be in my prayers.

Ken was a wonderful teacher and a great human being who always inspired me. My classroom was beside his for a few years and I heard and saw his dedication to his students. My deepest sympathy to the Alwine Family!

The thing I remember most about Kenny was years ago at lunch time he always had a perfect meal! Home cooked left overs from dinner the night before! To the family of Ken Alwine,
I got to know Ken through coaching track and field at Eastern York HS. I always looked forward to going against Susquehannock because Ken would entertain me with stories. I just loved whenever I could get together with him at those meets or invitationals. He was a GREAT person for the kids he worked with and with all the other coaches. Ken was a true friend through coaching and I will miss him greatly, I celebrate a life well lived and I will cherish the memories of him forever. I am truly sorry for the loss of your husband, father, and grandfather. God bless

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Alwine. He was an amazing teacher (dedicated-tough-fair-funny), inspirational track coach & honorable/charismatic good man! He is the reason I love distance running.....he is always my answer to the security question " favorite teacher" and his passing was way too soon! I can still hear him giving the distance runners our "easy practice instructions"-- " ok sports fans/kiddos, we're gonna do some long slow distance-- followed by a couple of S-T-R-I-Ders--hit the weight room"...He always made you feel capable of greatness at a track meet even if the odds weren't in your favor. He was a mentor- a man to be respected. Coach Ken will be surely missed! My thoughts and prayers are with his family. With deep sympathy,

In my life, there are a handful of teachers/professors that made their subject interesting and Mr. Alwine is one of them. I was shocked to hear of his passing. He was a great person, teacher and coach. I remember his facial expressions when he said those one-liners. Even when he was serious those expressions made me chuckle. My favorite one-liner..."chances are slim and none and Slim is out of town". He was the first person I heard that from and I still use it thinking of him. My thoughts and prayers to his family.
