Family-Placed Death Notice

DUENSING, Walter WALTER P. DUENSING Walter P. Duensing, "Walt," of Dunwoody, GA, 88, passed away December 16, 2013. Walt was born May 27, 1925 in Mission, SD. He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Lydia (Niemann) Duensing and his older sisters, Erna Hergenrader and Esther Herrs. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 after graduating from high school in Beatrice, NE. During WWII as a Hospital Corpsman 1st Class/Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class, he proudly served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre on the USS Rockbridge where he went ashore in the 3rd wave landing at the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After WWII, he was assigned shore duty at Camp Detrick, MD and then recalled to active sea duty on the USS Firedrake, the USS William Seiverling, and the USS Wiseman in the Korean War. He continued his service until 1957 with shore duty at the Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD. In April 1950; he married Margaret Price and the two celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before Peg's passing in September 2012. Walt led a full and active life. His interests included volunteering, writing, fishing, drawing, travel, and doing crossword puzzles. He was an active participant in his local VFW Post 10822 (Dunwoody/Sandy Springs), where he served as Chaplain for 20 years. He volunteered for decades at the Dunwoody Nature Center and was a contributing member of the Atlanta Writer's Club. Walt was an extraordinarily creative person. He wrote novels, short stories, poetry, and plays. He enjoyed acting and was in "Andersonville", "Drumline", "Deadly Run", corporate videos, commercials, and was featured with his wife, Peg, in the Ludicris music video "Welcome To Atlanta". Walt was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Walt is survived by his children: Lynn (Bruce) Dunn; Robert (Susan) Duensing; Debbie (David) Eastis; Sue (Thomas) Revels; and his grandchildren: Brian (Kate) Duensing and great-grandson Tyler; Courtney (Kris) Shirley; Tracey (Jonathan) Redford; Carter Eastis; Kyle Eastis, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Dunwoody United Methodist Church chapel, 1548 Mt. Vernon Road, on Saturday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. Family will receive visitors in the Parlor starting at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations "In memory of Walt Duensing" are made to: Dunwoody/Sandy Springs VFW Post 10882, 4919 Trailridge Pass, Dunwoody, GA 30338; or Dunwoody Nature Center, 5343 Roberts Drive, Dunwoody, GA 30338.
