Neal Wiegman Obituary

NEAL ALVAN WIEGMAN Neal Wiegman was born on December 8, 1944 in Muncie, Indiana. He died at home in Chico on December 25, 2013 of lung cancer. He was 69. He did his undergraduate and graduate work in Spanish at Florida State University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1967, met his wife Nancy in 1968, and received a Ph.D. in 1969 at age 24. His teaching career began at Indiana University, Bloomington and included appointments at six other colleges and universities where he authored three books on Spanish literature and Hispanic culture. fter moving to Chico in 1990, Neal volunteered as an IRS tax preparer for the low income and the elderly, and as a teacher with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University, Chico. He regularly attended his wife's yoga classes at Chico Sports Club. Neal and Nancy visited Europe six times to walk the Camino de Santiago, a medieval pilgrimage route across northern Spain. Neal is the author of a historical novel about the Camino, Walking the Way: A Medieval Quest. Neal was the editor of Nancy's Bookshelf: Conversations with Writers, a collection of transcriptions of author interviews that have aired on Nancy's weekly radio show on KCHO, Northstate Public Radio, 91.7FM
