Tom Vaught
Mt. Vernon
Thomas Edward Vaught, 84, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2014 at the Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville. He was born in Seattle, WA on June 23, 1929 to Mable Mariah Schofield and Loren Dale Vaught.
Tom was a lifetime member of First Christian Church. He served as a licensed Funeral Director for over 64 years. He owned and operated Tom's Furniture Store in Mt. Vernon until 1974. He moved to English, IN where he managed Denbo Funeral Home, and he served 4 terms as County Coroner, was Director of the Crawford County EMS, and served on the town board, which assisted in the relocation of the town of English after multiple floods. Tom later returned home to work at Norvell and Schneider Funeral Home until his retirement in 2009. He was a lifetime member of the 20 Man Club, and was a member of the Mt. Vernon Lions Club. Tom was a Mason and belonged to Beulah Lodge in Mt. Vernon and the Hadi Shrine. He relished spending time with his family and always enjoyed a fine meal.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dale and Richard Vaught; and sister, Marilyn Newcome.
Tom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nona (Berry) Vaught; daughters, Joyce (Bruce) Bauer, Marian Schneider (Robert Montgomery), Elaine (Mike) Freeman, Cindy (Mike) Schneider; grandchildren, Tom (Tammy) Schneider, Chris (Andrea) Harp, Joe (Amanda) Schneider, Sara (Brandon) Bullard, Jonathon (Nancy) Harp, Sally (Randy) Shappell, and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday January 16, 2014 at First Christian Church, 1403 Country Club Rd. in Mt. Vernon with burial to follow at Immanuel UCC Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Schneider Funeral Home 512 Main St. in Mt. Vernon and continued from 9:00 am until 10:00 am service time on Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Deaconess Hospice Care Center or Voice of the Martyrs.
