CLYDE ANDERSON JR., 91
WEST PORTSMOUTH – Clyde Anderson Jr., 91 of West Portsmouth, died Monday, February 3, 2014, at SOMC Hospice. He was the son of the late Clyde Sr. and Ruth Lybrook Anderson of Friendship, Ohio. He lived most of his life in Friendship and was a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church since 1931.
Clyde graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1940 and later was inducted into the United States Army as a technician in the 31st Infantry Division, spending 37 months much of which was in the South Pacific area, where he received 2 Bronze Stars. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he entered Ohio University where he earned degrees in Secondary and Elementary Education. He taught in Portsmouth City, Portsmouth West High School and Friendship Elementary. He served as Principal of Friendship School for 10 years before retiring in 1976 with 32 years of service. Clyde was a kind, gentle man who will be missed by his family, former students, teachers and friends.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Betty, his granddaughter Angie Arnett and 2 brothers-in-law, Ralph Cooley and Leon Davis.
Clyde is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Lee) Gifford of Columbus and Cathy (David) Norman of West Portsmouth; two sisters, Eva Davis of Portsmouth and Jean Cooley of Stout; two grandsons, Brian (Mary) Gifford of Gahanna and Chris (Tracey) Norman of West Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Kim (Chris) Zweydorff of Canal Winchester; nine great-grandchildren and a grandson-in-law, Andy Arnett.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Reverend Gary L. Hopkins officiating. Interment will be in McKendree Cemetery with graveside military rites by the James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday starting at 11 a.m.

June was a special friend of our family. We so enjoyed the time after his retirement when he worked on our farm. Our dear late Katherine Rapp admired him as a principal when she taught at Friendship School. He was an outstanding educator. We all extend our deepest condolences.f

Mr. Anderson was my principal at Friendship for 2 years before he retired. I had the pleasure of seeing him at Friendship UMC. Such a gentle, kind man.
