RUBIN, MELVIN
We are saddened to announce the death of Dr. Melvin Rubin on February 23rd, 2014, peacefully in his sleep at home after living for two years with lung cancer.
He was born May 10th, 1932 in San Francisco to Morris and May (Gelman) Rubin.
He leaves behind him accomplishments that are numerous, varied and profound, as an internationally significant educator and physician, and as an extraordinary leader and contributor to arts and music in his chosen beloved community of Gainesville. He was especially proud of being named 2012 Alumnus of the Year by his UCSF medical school class. As an ophthalmologist he restored vision to countless appreciative patients. As a father, husband, and friend and as a man of great humor, intelligence and integrity, he expanded the vision of all of us.
He is survived by his beautiful wife of 60 years Lorna; his three children, Gabrielle (Jacques Israelievitch), Danny (Louise), Michael (Jennifer) and his sister Phyllis Tannin; his grandchildren David, Michael, Joshua, Maida, Asa, Jonah, Alina; his great-granddaughter Aya.
Mel will be remembered as someone who loved beauty, especially in nature, art, and music. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Harn Museum of Art 3259 Hull Rd, Gainesville, FL 32607.
A celebration service will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street, with Rabbi David Kaiman officiating.

Mel was a wonderful friend. We shared an interest in coins and classical music.I left Gainesville many years ago but used to think of him whenever I heard certain pieces of chamber music. In recent years, I sent him an email on Groundhog's day to commemorate the wonderful movie that his son had made. This year I got no reply. I will miss him
Mel had a wonderful life. My heart goes out to his children and to his wife Lorna.
