NIEWEG ELROY LOUIS NIEWEG On February 5, 2014, Elroy Louis Nieweg of Arlington, Virginia. Elroy is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Dorothy Lowe Nieweg; his daughter Emily Nieweg Giunta, son-in-law John Peter Giunta and granddaughters Sarah Marie Giunta and Caroline Latigo Giunta; his son Robert Lowe Nieweg, daughter-in-law Kelly Jo Ferris and granddaughter Katherine Ferris Nieweg; and brother Fredrick William Nieweg. Elroy was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Henry Nieweg. Elroy was born on February 9, 1925, in St. Charles, Missouri, to Friedrich Johann Nieweg and Hulda Emelia Wiedoewer. He died peacefully with his wife, daughter, and son at his side. Elroy was a good man, a gentle parent and grandparent, and faithful public servant. He enlisted in the Navy's V-7 program after high school and was commissioned as Ensign, USNR in 1945. He retired as a Lt. Commander in 1965. Elroy graduated magna cum laude from Allegheny College in 1957 and received a Master of Arts in Public Administration in 1960 from George Washington University. In 1957, he began his civil service career with the Bureau of Naval Personnel, then transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration from which he retired in 1984. Elroy had a second career as a systems analyst in the private sector for several years after retirement. Dorothy and Elroy lived in Arlington County from 1959 to 2011. Elroy enjoyed volunteer- ing in their community; serving as treasurer of the Arlington Forest Swim Club and of the Arlington Forest Citizens Association for many years. He was active in local Democratic politics and served as campaign treasurer for the Honorable William T. Newman Jr., Christopher Zimmerman, and Paul Ferguson, among others. He served on Arlington County's Civil Service Commission for 14 years and as an Elections Officer for the Arlington Forest precinct for several years. Elroy was a dedicated supporter of several organizations, including the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA), WETA public television and radio, Northwestern University Midshipmen's School Alumni (NUMSA), League of Women Voters, and National Trust for Historic Preservation. The family thanks Dr. Steven D. Yang as well as the devoted caregivers and Hospice staff at Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads for their kindnesses and good care of Elroy, our dear husband, father, and grandfather. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Goodwin House, 3440 S. Jefferson Street, Falls Church. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
