Patricia Roland Obituary

Roland, Patricia A.Patricia A. Roland, 57, of Orlando, Florida died Thursday, 3 April, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her large and loving family during her final hours. Patricia was born in Valley Forge, PA. and was the daughter of Walter J. and Charlotte (nee Delahaie) Roland of Slatington, PA. Patricia spent her early childhood in San Francisco, CA, her mother's hometown, until her family moved to Schuylkill and then Lehigh County, Pa. She was a 1974 graduate of Slatington High School and received two Bachelor degrees; one in English and one in Journalism. She also earned a Masters degree in English from Shippensburg University. She worked for years as a freelance journalist for various publications including The Harrisburg Patriot; was a published poet; French teacher and most recently an adjunct professor at Valencia Community College (Fla.) teaching creative writing. In addition to her love of the written word, Patricia spoke fluent French and traveled extensively throughout her life. Her love affair with France and the British Isles began in her college years and would largely define who she was. She leaves behind many friends in Europe and the UK as well as the US. Survivors: Patricia's proudest accomplishment and joy were her two daughters; Pamela (nee Mateya) Draper, wife of Evan Draper of Philadelphia, PA and Rachel Aimee Mateya of Orlando, FL. In addition to her lovely and talented daughters, Patricia is survived by her mother, Charlotte D. Roland of Slatington; and sisters Molly Dennehey of Emmaus; Charlotte Schmoyer and Doris Roland of Slatington and Rachel Roland of Germansville. Brothers Walter of Orefield, Jerome of Phoenix, AZ; Matthew of Media; Timothy of Emmaus and Daniel of Danielsville. Services: Arrangements are under the direction of Judd Funeral Home, Allentown. Contributions: None.
