Ione Loughrin Obituary

Ione Rose Loughrin (Goehler)

Ione Rose Loughrin (Goehler), age 82 of Madison, formerly of Appleton and Darboy, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 with her family by her side at St. Mary's Care Center. Ione was born to the late Michael and Frances (Kugler) Goehler in Appleton on August 31, 1931, the sixth of seven children. Ione attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Appleton High School. Upon graduation, Ione worked as a typist at Riverside Paper Company. She was very proud of that "good paying job". She then met her soon-to-be husband Cyril Loughrin at the Badger Bar on College Avenue. Cy and Ione were married on April 15, 1953 at Sacred Heart Parish.

Cy and Ione started their lives together in an upstairs apartment on Appleton Street. In 1956, they moved to their first home on Summer Street. During those next eleven years, Cy and Ione welcomed four children into their lives. Peter, Sandy, Sharon and Paul. Ione became Mom; our Mom.

Mom was a wonderful homemaker. Lots of home cooking made for tasty school lunches in those brown paper bags. She also made the best potato salad, Christmas candy and cookies. Mom always made sure we had our homework done, that our clothes were clean, that we were on time each school day. We fondly recall her handing us daily bus money and milk money --- all doled out from the little globe bank in the kitchen cupboard.

Her joy and laughter in the house was accented by lots of music. Mom liked the radio on and the music channel playing. She knew most of the words and would enthusiastically hum the rest. We all still enjoy those songs and humming is just fine.

Mom's typing and spelling skills were exceptional and that helped greatly as her children made their way through school and beyond. Mom made it possible for her four children to succeed.

The Goehler and Loughrin extended family get-togethers were common, and Mom made sure we attended them all. Mom set such a great example for us of family, togetherness, support, patience and unconditional love. Her annual telephone calls to each child on each one's birthday to simply sing "Happy Birthday" were so special and uniquely Ione.

Mom was instrumental in helping her husband, Cy, complete his advanced degree in Traffic Management, which then allowed the family to move to a newer home on Michigan Street. And, 35 years after that, they moved to a brand new home on Easter Lily Drive in Darboy. Their dream house. Mom's encouragement of Cy should not go unnoticed. She put all of her energy into the lives of those around her. Of her family. Over the years that family grew and grew. Eight grandchildren, Twelve great-grandchildren. Many of them remember their grandma cheerfully playing card games and board games with them.

Mom and Dad traveled to visit relatives and were able to attend many important family moments. They made a point of it. And, Mom and Dad did some vacationing in Europe twice. Once to Ireland and once to Italy.

These past few years saw Mom and Dad's health decline yet they were able to spend additional time, together, at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison where Cy passed away on February 24, 2011. Since that time, Mom made new friends, was able to do some things just for her (crafts, music programs, bingo) and she was able to be visited by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren many, many times. Mom's final days were peaceful and reflective. We miss our Mom greatly.

Ione is survived by her son Peter (Debbie) Loughrin, daughter Sandy (George) Currie, daughter Sharon (Dan) Haak, son Paul Loughrin; grandchildren Jason (Elizabeth) Loughrin, Beth Rauch, Ryan Loughrin, Emily (Zenon) Kochan, Sara (Joel) Marshall, Stephanie (Mike) Gentz, Andrew Haak, Natalie Haak and fiancée Nicholas Tallman; great-grandchildren Ian, Patrick and Claire Loughrin, Brooke Rauch, Tai Loughrin, Kailey and Olivia Kochan, Makenzie, Sydney and Blake Marshall, Addison and Braeden Gentz; brother Jerry (Mary) Goehler and brother-in-law Leland Laux.

Ione was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cyril, her brother Michael, her sisters Bernice (Clarence) Williams, Marie (first husband Joe and second husband Sam) Utschig-Achterberg, Rosella (Carl) Bergman and June (Wallace) Bergman.

A funeral liturgy for Ione will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 11:00 am at SACRED HEART PARISH, 222 E. Fremont Street, Appleton. Father Don Zuleger will be officiating. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in the Town of Lebanon. The visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 am until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a memorial donation be made to Sacred Heart Parish, Appleton. Online condolences can be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.

Ione's family would like to thank the staff and friends at St. Mary's Care Center for all of their kindness and support.
