Helen Augustine Obituary

Helen C. Augustine

Helen C. Augustine, 93, of Oconto, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Helen Claire Agnes Anna Augustine was born to Agnes Extrom and Henry H. Derpinghaus on Dec. 31, 1920, in Oconto, WI. Helen graduated from Jefferson and Oconto High Schools. Helen was baptized Christian and later received into Full Communion as a Catholic by Fr. Matthias Alt on March 8, 1941, and married Joseph James Augustine on Aug. 9, 1941, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Helen played trumpet in the high school band and organ at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oconto. In her early years she worked at Crawford's Grocery Store, for Dr. and Mrs. Kwapy, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Holt, at Panetti's Ben Franklin Store and Lauerman Department Store. As a young woman Helen made and sold items such as yarn dogs and later went on to use her talent as a seamstress to make clothing and liturgical vesture. Helen and Joe owned and operated Augustine Market for 15 years. She also drove school bus for Lane Bus Lines and worked at the Beyer Home Museum both as a guide and lawn care. For many years Helen served as Treasurer of the Oconto County Historical Society and was granted a Life Membership for her dedicated service. Helen was a Cub Scout Den Mother, involved with St. Joseph Grade School and School Band, enjoyed bowling, ice skating; was a member of the Oconto County Grocers Association; and chaffeured the School Sisters of Notre Dame. From early on Helen was feline friendly with her last cats being Missie and Bluffy. In 'retirement' Helen loved gardening with son Ken and was awarded the title: 'Flower Lady of Oconto' by the Oconto Garden Club. In 1989, she hosted the garden club for a tour of the gardens at 'Papa's House,' (Don Levy-Obertin Home) on Superior Ave, Oconto. Also in 'retirement' Helen was an ecumenical ambassador of music playing the organ in most Oconto churches. Her choice of 'Come, Christians Join to Sing' for her Funeral Mass voices our unity in Christ. Helen was well known for her service through various ministries at Holy Trinity (St. Joseph) and was "Parishioner of the Month" in April, 1991. She served as President of the Altar Rosary Society; Chair of funeral luncheons and game tent for the parish picnic for which she and Joe provided many handmade prizes. Helen was organist for 25 years, choir director, liturgy planner, and liturgical environment coordinator. Helen's quality work as a seamstress provided beautiful chasubles, dalmatics and stoles for her priest son, Ken; parishes in which he served; priests in the Milwaukee Archdiocese; Green Bay Diocese, and others; St. John Cathedral, Milwaukee; and Sacred Heart School of Theology, Hales Corners, WI.

Survivors include: son, Rev. Kenneth J. Augustine; sister, Laura June Ottow; Granddaughter Lynn Marie (Don) Woo; Great Granchildren: Kaitlyn, Michael, Jacob and Megan Woo; nephew and niece, Bill and Sallie Ottow; cousins, Elizabeth (Don) Meverden; other relatives and friends including neighbor and 'adopted son' Mark Orth and family . Helen was predeceased by her parents; husband, Joseph; brother-in-law, Lawrence; son and daughter-in-law, James and Ruthann and other relatives.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto, from 1 to 3:45 PM Sunday, July 6, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 4 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Oconto with Fr. Kenneth J. Augustine presiding; Fr. Joel Sember, Pastor and other priests concelebrating.
