Jowdy, Mamie
Mamie (Sadowski) Jowdy, 98, of Danbury, wife of the late Sadella R. Jowdy, mother of Daniel P. Jowdy, grandmother of Danielle, Christopher and Rebecca and great grandmother of Patrick Jowdy, died on Monday evening, August 11, 2014 at Danbury Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
Mrs. Jowdy was born in the family's Danbury Beaver St. home on December 23, 1915 to Paul P. and Rose (Stepanovich) Sadowski. She attended local schools and distinguished herself athletically in basketball, softball, swimming, skiing and bowling. Throughout her life, she remained active in sports, playing on various local ladies' teams.
She embarked in a career of modeling, but discontinued her pursuit in favor of remaining close to the boy next door and sandbox playmate who became her husband in 1935 until his death in 1969.
Backyard picnics, Sundays at Seaside Park, summers in Hyannis, winters in Stuart, FL, bringing family, extended family and neighbors together was her enjoyment.
She was employed with the Remington Arms Corporation and the Barden Corporation where she retired in 1982 after twenty-five years of employment.
Active in the parish life of St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church of Danbury for the past seventy years, she was a daily communicant, a member and former president of its Ladies Guild, Altar Society, Bazaar Committee, Festival Committee, Annual Hafli Committee, St. Patrick's Day Card Party and Raffle Committee and the "Sadie & Mamie Church Property Management Committee".
She was a member of Team Lebanon Host Town Committee of the Special Olympics World Games held in Danbury in 1995.
Residing on Granville Avenue, passersby would see her outdoors raking, sweeping, weeding, mowing or shoveling on a daily basis. A garden hose, wheel barrel or bucket of sand and salt would always be in close proximity depending upon the time of year. Finally, at the age of 95, consenting to semi-retirement, she left the physical work to others but still oversaw or inquired about the required day to day tasks. Mamie was affectionately regarded as "the boss".
In November 2012, Mamie received recognition by her parish, the National Apostolate of Maronites, Senators Blumenthal and Murphy, the Connecticut General Assembly and the City of Danbury for her dedication to St. Anthony Parish since 1935 and for her role in building the parish into a strong family of faith.
She is a recipient of the National Apostolate of Maronite's Massabki Brothers Medal.
She was recognized by the Lebanon-American Club along with her dear friend Sadie and four others for their contributions to their respective churches and contributions to the community on Lebanon Day 2014 in the City of Danbury.
She was a member of the Candlewood Chapter #3340 A.A.R.P. Mamie enjoyed crocheting, cooking and outdoor activities. She was an avid NY Yankee, NY Giant and UConn Lady Huskies fan.
In addition to her son, grandchildren, and great grandson, she is survived by four nephews, Timothy J. Wrobel, Joseph P. Sadowski, Vincent A. Wrobel and Peter P. Sadowski as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews and many special friends including Sherry Ingram, her dedicated caregiver of seventeen years, and the past and present full and part-time staff at Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Rosemary; two sisters, Helen R. Clarke and Victoria C. Wrobel; a brother, Joseph P. Sadowski, Sr. and by a nephew, Leonard P. Sadowski.
She also leaves her four legged joy, Jesse.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank those individuals who also provided care and services for Mamie: Connecticut Community Care, Inc., Masonicare, Almost Family and Meal on Wheels.
We also would like to thank those who provided her with pastoral care and friendship over the years.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 6:45 PM at St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 17 Granville Ave., Danbury.
Private interment will take place on Tuesday in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
The family will receive friends at St. Anthony Maronite Church on Monday from 4 PM to 6:30 PM.
Contributions to the Office of Radio & Television, Archdiocese of Hartford, 15 Peach Orchard Rd., Prospect, CT 06712, St. Anthony Church Scholarship Fund or to an Elderly Service organization of your choice would be appreciated.

Dear Dan and Family,
I was so deeply saddened to learn of the death of your beloved mother and God's servant, Mamie. She was such a treasured memory of my days in Danbury. She always brought a spirit of joy and love in each of my encounters with her. My prayer for you is that the precious memory of her days among us will far exceed that sadness of her passing. May she pray for us in her new home in heaven that we may all see each other again in the unending joy of eternal life. May her memory be eternal.

Dan, Danielle, Christopher, and Rebecca, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. She was such a wonderful woman to me and I truly enjoyed the few times that I got to spend with her. When I would come over, she would always have a piece of fruit or something to eat, as well as a loving smile each time. I will always remember her and the sense of comfort even while in the next room, and wish I could be there with you to celebrate her memory and life. God Bless You.

Everyone who had the good fortune to have known her, truly loved her for her gracious and generous spirit. She was so incredibly giving and ever ready to help in any capacity. Dear Dan and Family:
Both Kathie and I were saddened to learn of the passing of your Mom - she was part of the bedrock of St. Anthony's and I can still visualize her out front early on a snowy day in winter vigorously shoveling the snow from the sidewalks so everyone could pass safely. What a strong, loving, giving mother and woman. We have all been blessed by her life and the lives of her family!
