Brigid Murray O'Connor, 69, of Plains Township, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.
Born Oct. 5, 1946, in Ashley, she was a daughter of the late Sen. Martin L. Murray and Catherine Doyle Murray.
A graduate of St. Leo's High School, Brigid earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Misericordia University and a Master of Science degree in education and reading specialist certification from the University of Scranton.
Mrs. O'Connor taught in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for 15 years, retiring from Kistler Elementary School in 1982.
Brigid had a keen interest in local politics. She was appointed to the board of trustees of the Luzerne County Community College and subsequently became its first female chairperson. In 1995, she successfully campaigned for a seat on the board of commissioners of Plains Township. The longest serving female commissioner of a first class township in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, she entered her sixth consecutive term in January and attended her most recent meeting via telephone last week. Through her tenure, she was instrumental in establishing and developing the summer camp program and served as chairperson of every department in the township at different times.
A member of the Parish of Ss. Peter and Paul, she was also active with the Plains Township senior citizens' project and Plains Township Crime Watch.
Brigid will be greatly missed by her husband of 45 years, Kevin M. O'Connor; son, Martin Patrick O'Connor,Windermere, Fla.; sister, Katie DeAngelis, Hatboro; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of Brigid's Life will begin Sunday with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, Hudson Road, Plains Township, and will continue with visitation 10 a.m. Monday, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to Ss. Peter and Paul Food Pantry.

O'Connor Family,
Years ago, when I first moved to Plains, I did not know any of the commissioners. I had a few problems and contacted Bridget. I want to pass on that she was truly amazing in helping me with my problems. I can tell you that she was the only person willing to help me at that time. I pray for Bridget and your family at this difficult time. She was a wonderful person.

Dear Kevin,
I worked at Kistler School as a lunch aid that's where I met her also she taught my son . She was so sweet and such a great teacher. She had a wonderful personality she smiled and spoke to everyone so well liked . God Bless Her Soul!

Taught with Brigid at Hoyt and Kistler. She was a wonderful teacher and person. It's been years since we saw her and Kevin but whenever we ran into them , we found them to have great warmth and friendliness. Very saddened by her passing.
