Afton Black Vandenberg, our wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully September 15, 2016, at her home in Layton, Utah. She was born in Eureka, Utah, on August 8, 1920. She grew up in Magna, Utah, with her parents and six siblings. Family was very important to her. She would do anything for her children: Johnny Val, Annette, Wayne, Karol, and Vandy. She had and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. As she became less able to get around her greatest joy was watching Great Grandchild Kai climb into her lap and kiss her. Mom believed in hard work. She was a taxi driver during World War II before moving to California where she worked for Hughes Aircraft Co. She retired and moved to Utah with her daughters. She enjoyed going out to breakfast and had a standing lunch date with friends. She was known for driving fast, loving orange, and watching "Wheel of Fortune." Afton is already missed. A special thanks to Ginger Gonzalez and hospice for special care.

Afton has been and always will be a special person to me. I lived with her and Annette for a period of time and loved her cheerful ways. She was always so pleasant to be around. I never heard her say a cross word about anyone. She was the first person I ever met who would seed a whole watermelon so everyone could enjoy it without messing with the seeds. I know she will be missed by her loving family.

I met this wonderful, loving lady at Hughes Aircraft. Knowing Afton was a blessing. In my time of need when my wife and I separated, Afton was there. I left one morning only with the clothes on my back and a job. When I was at work that day, Afton came up to me and asked me if I had anywhere to stay. I said no and she said now you do.
When Afton retired and left to Utah to be closer to her daughters, she trusted me and Nellie Cellura to stay back at the house in Reseda until it sold.
I love you Afton and we be looking up above to see you speeding through the sun rays with your beautiful smile.
