Wayne Allen Taylor
Wayne Allen Taylor died peacefully, holding his daughter's hand, on September 14, 2016 in Denton, Texas at the age of 82.
Wayne was born on February 18, 1934 in Pampa, Texas to his parents, Josie and L. R. Taylor. He graduated from Plainview High School in Plainview, Texas in 1952. After briefly attending Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, where he played basketball, he attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock, TX, where he obtained a degree in Business Administration and Finance. Wayne was then drafted into the United States Army to serve overseas in Wiesbaden, Germany as a Finance Clerk for almost two years. While serving in the army, he became interested in becoming an educator. Upon his discharge, he returned to Texas Tech and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While attending Texas Tech, he met and married his college sweetheart and lifelong mate, Glenda June Cole, in 1959. Upon graduation, the Taylors moved to McAllen, Texas where Wayne started his teaching career. During those years, the couple welcomed two daughters into their home.
Wayne was a fun-loving and kind teacher who loved sharing his knowledge of history and government with people. In Plainview, people will remember him either as Coach Taylor at Estacado Junior High, where he coached both girls and boys athletics, or as Dean Taylor at Plainview High School where he served as a grade level administrator. He retired while still in Plainview with over 30+ years of service in education. Upon retirement, the Taylors moved to Houston for eight years and then moved to Denton for the rest of their lives.
People remember Wayne for his light-hearted and endearing nature. Everywhere he lived people enjoyed being around him, listening to his stories, jokes and his beautiful singing voice. Wayne loved his family, teaching, coaching, watching Texas Tech play on tv and just being around people. Wayne was a devoted husband and father, a caring teacher and coach to his students, and a doting papa to his grandkids.
Wayne is survived by his oldest daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Lynn Greenhill of Houston; youngest daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Jason Cone of Denton; grandson and wife, Taylor and Katie Greenhill of Plymouth, MN; grandson Sawyer Greenhill of Bethany, OK; and granddaughters Kasey and Sophie Cone of Denton; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Glenda June; his brother Loyd Taylor; and his sister; Eula Dawson.
Wayne's life will be celebrated at a memorial service on October 22nd at 10:00am at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton. All are welcome to attend.
The Taylor Family wishes to express their gratitude for the tender care and assistance that Wayne received from Denton Rehabilitation & Nursing Center and Compass Hospice.
