Evelyn McAULIFFE Obituary

McAULIFFE, Evelyn Smith Evelyn Smith McAuliffe, age 92 of Sandy Springs, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2016. Evelyn was born in Lebanon, Tennessee on July 18, 1924 the daughter of Harry Trousdale and Lillian Mann Smith. After time in Tennessee and Alabama, she along with her parents and brothers, Charles J. Smith and Raymond Smith, moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1933. Evelyn graduated from Girls High School in June, 1942 and on September 4, 1942 she married her high school sweetheart, Hinson McAuliffe, who for 74 years has loved, respected and honored her as "the most loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother I have ever known". When Hinson joined the United States Army in October 1942, Evelyn and Hinson shared good times with fellow service people during leave in the States before Hinson shipped out for the European Theater in October 1943. They both corresponded frequently with each other during their separation of two years and continued to make good and lifelong friends. Years later they became involved in the annual reunion of the 456th Anti-Aircraft Unit and socialized and reminisced frequently with those good friends who shared the experience. Their son, Gary Hinson McAuliffe, was born in October 1946 and as he grew, Evelyn supported his activities in Sunday School, the Boy Scouts and the West End Elementary Band. She later became a Pink Lady with the Piedmont Hospital Woman's Auxiliary using the Cheer Cart to provide cheerful thoughts and spiritual help for the patients there. She worked for many years in the Nursery Department at Druid Hills Baptist Church, served as President of her Sunday School Class at West Manor Baptist Church and recently was a member of the Agape Class at Briarlake Baptist Church. She was particularly gifted in "one on one" relationships and used that God-given talent to enjoy and cheer her many friends. In recent years she participated in the Dunwoody Baptist Water Aerobics Class and became a resident at Mount Vernon Towers in Sandy Springs where she was able to enjoy new friendships. She loved her family members deeply and always remembered them in special ways. She often commented about a family member or a good friend who was "so sweet". Her love of people and her love of God will always be remembered by her family and her friends and she will be both missed and remembered fondly. Evelyn leaves behind her husband of 74 years, Hinson McAuliffe, who often praised her as "one of the greatest companions any man ever had". She is also survived by her son Gary and his wife Sandi, grandson Gary H. McAuliffe Jr. and wife Colleen, granddaughter Patricia Nutting and husband John (Bo), great grandchildren Jake Nutting, Kate Nutting and Carson McAuliffe and other family members. The Funeral Service will be held in the chapel of H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel at 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328 on Monday, October 17, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 1:00 PM and a reception will follow. A private family entombment service will take place at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Woman's Auxiliary of Piedmont Hospital, 1968 Peachtree Road NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309 or to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, 550 Water Works Road, Palmetto, Georgia, 30268 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

We extend our love and deepest sympathy to Mr. McAuliffe, Gary, Sandi, and the entire family. Mrs. McAuliffe was a very special lady; we have loved her many years and admired her example as an incredible person. We are assured of her deep love for her dear Hinson and entire family. What a blessing to have known her (and to know Mr. McAuliffe) for many years. They have touched our hearts in such special ways. God bless and comfort all.
