Nov. 21, 1942 - Oct. 16, 2016 Margaret (Peg) Spain Reese, 73, of Birmingham, AL, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Oct. 16th, surrounded by her family. Peg was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Lee Reese Jr. and her parents, Gladys Smith Spain and Alvin Nolan Spain. Peg was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Birmingham at an early age. After graduation from West End High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from The University of Alabama. Peg received her MA in Guidance and Counseling from UAB. While at Alabama Peg served as President of Panhellenic, was chairman of the University of Alabama Festival of Arts, an officer of Delta Zeta sorority and was active in many service organizations. She taught Speech and English in the Birmingham School System and later was a pre-school teacher at Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church. Peg attended Church of the Highlands. In 1968 Peg married her high school sweetheart and they remained devoted to each other until his death in 1990. Peg and Walter found much joy while making many special friends during their years in the Cahaba Heights Community being actively involved in athletics, school and many community organizations. Two of Peg's best friends were her Labs, Bear and Maggie, who brought her endless joy. She remained friends with many of her high school classmates and was an active member of the West End Bridge Sisters. Over the years she loved family trips to the beach, gardening, cooking, enjoying the birds from her kitchen window and watching her alma mater play football as well as other athletic events. Peg is survived by her devoted daughter, Paige Spain Reese, her two loving sons, Walter Lee Reese, III and Alvin Spain Reese (Clay), four precious granddaughters, Abbey, Darby, Anna Clay and Emmie, her faithful sister, Marquita Spain Self (Roland), her nephew Philip Spain Mullin (Amy) and niece Shay Bodnar (John Michael) as well as loved aunts, cousins, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Paige Musick, her friend and caregiver, for being such a blessing to us. Peg had been in the caring hands of Dr. Noah Fitzpatrick. Since 2001 Peg courageously fought with a positive outlook on life an uphill and lengthy battle when she was diagnosed with sarcoma followed by osteomyelitis. She actively touched the hearts of all who knew her. Peg blessed her family and friends lives and will be forever missed but never forgotten. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, Al. The memorial service will be Wednesday, Oct. 19th at 11:00 AM at Valley Chapel. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jean Wickstrom Liles Scholarship or to the Frank A. When someone we love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. Therefore, treasure the special time spent with Peg-draw strength from the love of family and friends-and may God's word and his loyal love comfort you and help you through this difficult time. Psalms 119:50,76
