John A. 'Sonny' Merolo, 90
Caring, generous and hardworking, he enjoyed time with family
John A. "Sonny" Merolo, 90, passed away peacefully on Jan. 9, 2020.
He was the devoted son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Merolo. He was the beloved husband of the late Thelma Merolo (nee Stinemire) for 43 years. He was the loving father of Peter Merolo and his wife, Cheryl and John Merolo and his wife, Sharon.
He was the cherished grandfather of John A. Merolo (Katherine), Angelique Anest (Michael) and Christina Pascoe (Wyatt). He was the dear great-grandfather of Nicholas and Michael Anest, Annie Merolo, and Julian Pascoe. He was the fond brother of the late Vincent "Buddy"Merolo and his late wife, Patricia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Sonny Merolo and born and raised in Staten Island, N.Y., and lived there most of his life. After high school and upon getting married he was called to service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, aboard the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain. After an honorable discharge he returned home and began working in and then owning the family construction businesses, Hercules Construction Corp. and Staten Material Corp. He retired after more than 40 years in business.
Sonny was a member of HAVOL men's club. During the winter season he would spend time in Hollywood, Fla. Sonny was a caring, generous, and hardworking man who enjoyed spending time with family and his many friends. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The funeral is from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd., on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, departing at 9 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be held in Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in Ocean View Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

John was one of the loveliest, kindest and righteous men I ever knew. I loved him like a father. May he Rest In Peace with his beloved wife Thelma who was a one of a kind gracious mother-in-law to me.
