Kenneth C. Chmielewski
Hudson County official, highly decorated Korean War veteran
Kenneth C. Chmielewski, 89, former Hudson County Register, passed away peacefully with the love of his life of 68 years, Lorraine (Hudak) Chmielewski close by, along with his children, Deborah and Gary.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, John Czerwinski; one of the original founders of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
He was also predeceased by his parents, Charles Muller and Carrie (Czerwinski) Chmielewski; his dear brother, Harold (Toolie) and sister-in-law, Helen; cherished sister, Norma (Lollie) and brother-in-law, Joseph Piscopo.
Along with his wife and children, he is survived by his son-in-law, Robert Kelly and his adoring grandchildren, James Kenneth and Robert Michael; nephews, Kenneth and Wayne Piscopo and many other family members and numerous friends.
Previous to his serving as County Register, he served our country in Korea as a sergeant and was awarded three Bronze Stars, the United States Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He started his career at Western Electric, then transferred to Nassau Smelting at Staten Island where he retired as an executive with Lucent Technologies. He later served as the executive director of the TMA.
Prior to his service, he was a three sport athlete in high school, where he scored the winning run after stealing second as the Bayonne High School baseball team won the 1949 state championship.
From there he went to war, came home and received his master's degree from Seton Hall University.
Ken was elected to the Bayonne Board of Education where he served as the vice president and was instrumental in having the Pulaski wing of Bayonne High School re-dedicated.
He was a member of many organizations including the president of the New York City Chamber of Commerce (Staten Island), Korea War Veteran Association trustee, Catholic War Veterans Post 1924, Bayonne High School Football Alumni Association, New Frontier Democrats, lifetime member of the Mt. Carmel Lyceum, and numerous charitable organizations - he just couldn't say no.
Ken loved his family and friends dearly, spending his summers at his home in Chadwick Beach, N.J.
He would talk to all who passed by and he loved his neighbors dearly- and all who would listen- while he was weeding and cleaning, telling all that we were in good shape.
Yes Dad, thanks to you, your family and all who knew you were better off and in good shape!
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at S. Fryczynski & Son Funeral Home, Bayonne, N.J.

Lorraine, Gary and Deborah we wanted to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of Kenny. We will always remember our beautiful shore days together and our conversations as we looked around the houses for something to repair. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
