Norma Goodman Obituary

Norma Goodman, 76, known to generations of Alaskans as "Alaska's First Lady of Television," died March 21, 2007, at Providence Alaska Medical Center after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and dear friends.
True to form, Norma wanted her funeral and wake open to the entire community. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and F Street. A wake will follow at the Top of the World restaurant in the Hilton Anchorage.
Norma was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Regina, Saskatchewan, to Lillian Baxter and Douglas Campbell. After high school, she moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to begin her career in radio. She moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1950, and at a New Year's Eve party that year she met Stuart "Sid" Goodman. Sparks flew, and after a year of courtship, they were married Oct. 4, 1952, in Vancouver.
The newlyweds arrived in Anchorage in November 1952 and went to work for Alaska Airlines, Sid as sales manager and Norma as a ticket agent. Norma joined KTVA in January 1954, and "Hostess House" signed on the air March 1 of that year. "She surely had no idea that morning that she was hosting the first installment of what would become the longest-running single-host program in the history of television and the third-longest-running program of any type, exceeded only by 'Face the Nation' and 'Meet The Press,' " her family wrote. Norma also served as a vice president of Northern Television and co-anchored the evening news for many years.
"Our community's appreciation of Norma's service was extensive," her family also wrote. "So extensive, in fact, that by the mid-1960s Sid had to set aside an entire room to hold all of the awards, plaques and certificates of appreciation Norma had accumulated serving our community. Norma's service to Alaskans and her country knew no bounds. She considered the day she became a naturalized U.S. citizen one of the greatest days of her life and was a proud patriot who devoted herself to supporting the armed forces in any way she could."
Among the scores of awards she received over her half-century career in public service, these were some of her proudest accomplishments: that she was the first woman -- civilian or military -- to fly a tactical mission in an TF-102 supersonic fighter jet on March 18, 1961; her recognition by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara for service to the military; McCall's Gold Mike award for excellence in broadcasting, which she received at the White House; her appointment by the Air National Guard as an honorary Brevet Chief Master Sergeant; the proclamation by Mayor Rick Mystrom in 1997 of Dec. 5 as Norma Goodman Day; her induction into the Alaska Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1990; and her recognition as the Alaskan of the Year in 2001. But perhaps her proudest service achievement came, her family wrote, when the Air Force Sergeants Association presented her with its highest national recognition of patriotic service -- the Americanism Award -- which honors love of country, commitment to democratic ideals and defense of the Constitution.
"But these achievements are only part of Norma's legacy," her family wrote. "At a time when few women had entered the work force, Norma not only forged a stellar career as a professional broadcaster but also created a home suffused with love, hospitality and a spirit of warmth and generosity. It was simply impossible to feel like a stranger under her roof. As a longtime resident said to Norma's son recently, 'Norma Goodman did more for this state than anyone alive; for generations, she made Alaskans proud to be Alaskans. It was like we had our own movie star.' "
Norma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Don Jelich of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Katherine Noble-Goodman of Redlands, Calif.; granddaughters, Cristi Bailey, Holly and Katrina Goodman, and Aidan Brie Noble-Goodman; grandson, Kieran Noble-Goodman; daughter-in-law, Connie Goodman; Alaskan extended family; dear friend, Sister Mary Clare; surrogate daughter, Vicky Miller; and various relatives throughout Canada.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Leslie; husband, Stuart; and son, Fraser.
Memorial contributions can be made to one of Norma's favorite guests, Friends of Pets.

Goodman Cousins,
I will miss Norma. I loved the visits we had with Norma and Sid on their Canadian "tours". I remember Mom, Dad, Grandpa Cliff, Norma and Sid (Stewart) would stay up for all hours of the night talking and laughing. There was always a lot of laughter, loud laughter! I will miss the parcels Norma and I sent back and forth to each other filled with goodies from either Canada or Alaska. Norma loved the Imperial Cheese and I will think of her when I eat it. I will also miss the Christmas letter, it was always my favorite.
Norma was THE BEST hostess. My Grandpa Cliff always said that it was so amazing because she was right there entertaing you and all of a sudden a gormet meal(that she prepared) would appear - how did she do it! How did she do a lot of things really. We were blessed to know her and are blessed by the memories she left us.
Love, Erinn, Harlan, Olivia and Annelise

Dear Kelly, Stuart, Christi and the Goodman family,

Our relationship with Norma began almost thirty years ago and to us she was a movie star, a deity on a pedestal. Of course, as time went by, it began to dawn on us that although she was still a deity on a pedestal, that perception was ours, never hers. That unique, innocent quality she possessed has been the foundation of a friendship that took us on a fun-filled, wonderful journey in which we experienced her triumphs and many of her sorrows. But she always had room in her heart to revel in the good fortune of others, to feel their loss, or to brighten their day just with her huge smile.

It is difficult to reflect upon something we had come to take for granted for so long. We feel privileged to have been included in Norma's world and especially in her private world of which only her family and close friends were a part.

We could write volumes on Norma but our best memories will be private ones that appear at odd times. It seems we can be doing anything, like chopping vegetables, and chances are one of us will say, "Remember when Norma...?" or "Remember how Norma would...?" We'll all be doing that forever and her spirit will remain with us just as long.

Norma had that rare gift of making me feel as though I were the most important person she could be seeing at that moment. We were all touched that way. She was selfless, and one really felt her generosity and kindness. That is something that cannot be faked.

Dear Kelly, Cristi and Stuart,
It breaks my heart to acknowledge that the First Lady of the 'Goodman Girls'is gone. Norma was always such a presence- I was sure she would live forever. She survived so many heartbreaks in her life, but she was truly the most upbeat person I have ever met. Even at the lowest points of her life she was quick to comfort those she was speaking to, while she herself kept on smiling. She never let on what was going on inside her heart. I was always so proud of my 'Alaskan cousin'- she was witty, articulate, beautiful and generous. I'm going to miss our converstations, our visits and our bond. You are that bond now, and we love you so much.
By the way,I feel sure that right at this moment Norma and Uncle Cliff are sharing a glass of rum and having a heated discussion about some obscure happening in the world. What a pair.So many memories!
Remember, you are Norma's children, and as such you are her legacy and her immortality. Be proud!
All my love,
Adrian

Dear Cousins,

I remember the very first time I met your Mom and Dad, arriving after an arduous and courageous journey BY CAR from Alaska..."so THAT'S Aunt Norma", I thought. She was always a presence in our house as Dad talked about her so much and I had a great black and white photo of her in her beauty queen days that I looked at all the time. I still can see Dad on the phone for hours trying to get news of your safety after the big earthquake in the 60's. I was thrilled when you all came down, again by car, for my starter wedding. Aunt Norma was uproarious as MC and had everyone laughing the whole time. It was always a treat to pick up the phone and hear her husky "Darling!" on the other end. She always kept in touch, even if we were not good about doing the same. When I met my current husband, and we were contemplating living together, Norma phoned to scold me - I was over 40 at the time! I loved Aunt Norma and admired her creativity, generosity, determination, straight-fowardness, humour, courage, and great faith. It is a sad fact of modern life that families live so far apart - but bonds do stay strong.

Dear Kel and Stuart,

I remember the excitement of that car pulling up in front of 114 st., covered in Alaskan dust. The energy and joy that it brought Dad and the rest of us will be an enduring memory for me.

I'll miss, so much, the opportunity to arrive at Aunt Norma's door again.

It was a beautiful obituary and I'm very proud I was a "rellie" of such an accomplished woman. I'm so sorry. We all send love,

Lori,Barry and Jesse

Sending all of you my thoughts and prayers for comfort from God's love during this difficult time. When I read in the ADN that Norma Goodman had died it was as if a part of my childhood did too....I have such fond, fond memories of watching Norma's show with my own mother when I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s in Anchorage. I can still picture Norma's beautiful smile and her ability to converse on any subject with her guests. I also remember some great cooking shows, too! Alaska has lost one of its true pioneers, but her legacy will go on always. Take care.

Norma was an inspiration to women, a successful blend of leadership, professionalism and feminism. Her values were sound and throughout her successes, she maintained them. As a mentor she went to bat for me more than once, as I am certain she did for others. How lucky we were to have worked with her. Thank you Norma.

When I moved from Seward to he "big city" of Anchorage in search of work as an entertainer and theatre actor-director in 1956, it was Norma Goodman who gave my first boost in that direction. Norma saw me in ACT's production of"Teahouse of the August Moon" and invited me for the first of many appearances on her show. I would never have been as welcome and successful in Anchorage without her constant assistance in the world of her community publicity. Norma was one of the most generous and giving people I have ever known. I offer my sympathy to her family and to the city of Anchorage. You have lost a wonderful treasure whose every award and honor was well deserved. I will miss her greatly, as I do Rhoda Fritz ( my producer) and Kay Linton (a supporter and friend.)I must agree with the writer who said that this trio in Heaven will have a chance to put all there love and generosity to good use and dear Lorene Harrison will be there to assist.
