I knew Shane from the mission. He was one of the missionaries that I respected and looked up to. It was a blessing to have known him.
While he has left this mortal life, he continues to live in the memories of those he has touched. Thank you for your example to me, Shane.

My name is Valerie Sanchez. I live in Urbandale, IA. I had the pleasure of meeting Shane's brother tonight. He is a missionary in our ward. He spoke so highly of Shane and his other brother. His words were "My brothers were perfect examples to me." He said that losing Shane completely changed his life and that is why he is on a mission today. I wanted you to know that Shane's legacy is living on in Iowa and that while Elder Figueroa is in our ward he will be well taken care of. If you'd ever like someone to check on him for you or send messages to him, my email address is [email protected].
With sincerest regards,
Valerie and David Sanchez

To the Figueroa Family,
A close friend of mine, Coreen Skousen (a cousin of Shane's) brought to my attention that as of today, it has been one year. I never met him or any of the family, but felt compelled to go on-line and read some of the blogs and memorials, etc., that were posted in honor of Shane, over the last 12 months... What an awesome man and beautiful wife & daughter. Several tears rolled down my cheeks- Please know you are still in my thoughts and prayers a year later, and will continue to be. Melisha the one thing I learned, after losing my husband at 26 years-old, is you never "get over" the loss or the pain, you just learn to keep going, and within time, you will be able to look back on all of your memories with many smiles and less tears. You and Kenzlie will make it- I promise!
With Warm Thoughts & Prayers,
Kimberly Box

Shane was a classmate of mine and I wasn't quite sure what to say here. I found this poem that is quite fitting.
FINAL INSPECTION
The Police Officer stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the police officer waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Cory & Jeri-
We continue to have your family in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry you are going through this devastating time. As we listen and read the endless tributes about Shane and his life, we are not surprised because we know you are amazing parents. Just know, that because of your loss, our family has been reminded of how precious our time is here on this earth. We have hugged our children more and laughed with them more this past week. We have been kinder and more forgiving with one another. We are trying not to sweat the small stuff and be better friends, neighbors and citizens. We love you and hope to meet that beautiful granddaughter of yours soon!

Dear Brother and Sister Figueroa,
You and your wonderful family are in our prayers at this time. Although we did not have the pleasure of getting to know your family personally, you both are such stellar examples of parents and church members. We have looked up to both of you for many years.
Sister Figueroa, many times in Refief Society and Testimony Meeting, you shared your great love and respect for your wonderful husband, and your biggest fears of your dear husband leaving for work and praying he would return safely. I am so relieved your prayers were answered on his part. I can not imagine the heaviness of your heart at this tragic time in your life, so I won't say I do. Losing a child, no matter the age has to be an unbearable sadness for you, your family and Husband. We are so extremly sorry for your horrific loss, I know that isnt much, but, we do think of you everyday and love you. Our hearts go out to you at this time. Shane, I am told was the picture of a perfect Son, Father, and Husband. Our hope for you is that Shanes incredible legacy lives on in your hearts and his precious little daughter will know what a great man her Daddy was.
Best Wishes....

Melisha and Family,
This is what Andrew wrote about Shane from his mission in Mexico City that we want you to know.
"Shane was like a brother to me, i remember all the times with him, playing airsoft guns in the house when Sister and Brother Pew weren't home. Aaron and I trying to arrest him when he was napping, using his police pepper spray to make dumb videos. i remember it all and I know that we will see him again. God has reasons for everything, reasons that some times we may just never understand. Our job here as missionaries is to share the truth that we are all so fortunate to have burned deep into our souls. Truth that he is alright, that he is with us in all, truth that we will live with him again, Both our Heavenly Father and Shane."
We love you all dearly and pray for peace and warm memories to come. The Lord will bless you and angels will be with you. With all of our love and appreciation for how your family has touched our lives and extended friendship and support always when we needed it. Our prayers are with you.

Dear Melisha,
It was so neat to watch you and Shane date and fall in love. My heart hurts for you at this time. Shane was a special person, full of faith, love and kindness. How blessed you and Kenzlie are to be sealed to him for eternity.
When I first heard about Shane, I wished it would all just go away. I didn't want you to have to go through something like this. But I found peace in the words of a modern day prophet who has taught us that the only way to take sorrow out of death is to take love out of life. I know you and Shane found love in this life, and you will continue to have love in the life to come, because your family is forever.

I knew Shane in Venezuela and had the privilege of serving in the same zone as he did. He was a great man and will be greatly missed. Melisha and Kenzlie will be in our prayers.

Shane was my companion in the MTC and out in the field. No two Elders were probably together more. He was there to teach and to celebrate every moment. I can still remember his mannerisms as he taught and his constant smile. He will be missed.

zlieI was privileged to know Shane as he served with me in the Venezuela Maracaibo Mission. Since I was his mission president, I was able to see him make and follow through with decisions in his life, as few others had the opportunity. I was never disappointed in how Shane overcame the challenges with which he was faced. In fact, I was blessed to know that I could always count on and trust Shane to do the right thing. A kinder, more compassionate person, I have never known. I know that the loss that Melisha feels cannot be understood. The peace of the Lord will lift you, Melisha and your daughter, that you will able to carry on in spite of the loss of your husband and Kenzlie's father. From all of Shane's fellow missionaries in the Venezuela Maracaibo Mission, we want you to know how much we love him.

Dear Melisha and family,
There are no words that can express the loss of Shane. Melisha, I know without a doubt that our Father in Heaven will be there for you and your daughter. There will be angels watching and protecting her and His comforting arms will be wrapped around you.
There are many people who love you both and love Shane. My prayers and thoughts are with you Cory and Jeri. I love each of you and your family so much. Families are Forever!

Shane was in my mission as my zone leader while I was his district leader, in fact I lived in the same apartment for about 4 months. He was a great man and always loved to serve others and did it with a smile on his face. I am sorry for your loss and pray that the idea of eternal families will permeate your thoughts and bring you great joy to know that you will be with him again and for all eternity.
