Wow. I only just now learned this news while searching for Tom's website to refer a friend who wants to get their W-EMT. I took my WFR from Tom almost ten years ago, and loved the whole thing. There are plenty of great medics who are bad teachers, and vice versa, but Tom was one of those special people who manage to excel at both. The fact that I'm seeking him out so many years later is a small testament to the exponential impact he made in the world before he left. Best wishes to all of his family and friends.

My condolences to Lucca, and all of Tom's friends and family. I took a WFR course with Rescue Specialists in the summer of 2007 and I can honestly say that it was one of the best educational experiences I've had. Tom was such an amazing instructor and he inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. Thank you, Tom- you will be missed.

I know that grieving lasts and returns many years. I hope that at this time you will know Tom is well thought of and not forgotten. I am sorry that I didn't know about this until I googled Rescue Specialists looking for MY instructor. He gave me the confidence and clarity to lead safe programs over the 9 years I studied with him. He will be greatly missed and has left a great legacy that buds in many young people's lives.

My condolences to the family and friends of Tom. I was lucky to be one of the many students whose lives Tom touched, and fortunate enough to be able to recert with him several times. The sadness of his loss is tempered only by remembering the passion, knowledge, and joy for living that he shared with countless others. You will be deeply missed, Tom.

To the family of Tom Clausing,
I never knew Tom personally, but I do feel a connection to him after riding to honor him in the 2009 National EMS Memorial Bike Ride. Each year we ride bikes 600 miles from New York to Roanoke Virginia for the National EMS Memorial Service. Each person riding gets a name of a person who has lost their life in the line of duty. The person I rode for was Tom Clausing. I remembered him and honored him each mile of the 600 mile journey. We were each given a dog tag with the hero's name on it. If the family of Tom could please contact me at [email protected], I would love to give you this dog tag and the biking gloves I wore throughout the ride. I hope to one day meet you and I am so sorry for you lose.

Heard this sad news only a few days ago while on the Payette. My sincere condolences to Lucca and family. I truly enjoyed Tom's depth of knowledge and deeply respected his ability to share that knowledge effectively with others. I'll never forget how his genuine smile and laughter offset the seriousness of his instruction. I know that when I next find myself in a sticky situation, caring for a patient in the backcountry or rigging ropes on a rapid, I will be referencing my memories of Tom's cool-headedness and professionalism to help guide my actions and thoughts. "Air goes in and out, blood goes round and round, oxygen is good." I'll never forget it. Thanks, Tom.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of my WFR re-cert instructor, Tom.
Tom’s loss is greater than I can possibly know, but his dedication to Wilderness Medicine, his enthusiasm, his real-world perspective, is something I will carry for the rest of my life. He really worked us in the re-cert we did, but it was great, and worth it. I’m so sorry. He went down doing what he loved. I pray you find comfort and peace.

Hi Lucca,
I've been thinking about you ever since Dave Zimmerman called me after the memorial and gave me the sad news. He said you were amazing, and that so many people turned out to remember Tom. My heart goes out to you. I have such fond memories of Tom in the Grand Canyon...setting up ropes so the rest of us could access incredible hikes. I am sending you a huge hug. Love, Kim

Lucca and Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I only knew Tom from being his student in a WEMT class in WA. He made us all feel like friends and family. I have attended many rescue classes and he was the best rescue instructor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He will be greatly missed......

Dear Lucca,
I just got a call from Mark Silver... We were on the Middlefork. I am so sorry for your loss but also for the loss to the community. Tom had a wicked sense of humor and a deep love and respect for the out doors. He will be missed. We are surrounding you with our love.
There are no words...

I was shocked today to learn of Tom's passing recently. Though I only knew him for 3 days during my WFR refresher course a few months ago, Tom was the type of guy you immediately looked up to and respected. After all my years of K-12 school, 6 years of college, and 9 years of volunteer ski patrol activities, Tom was certainly one of the best and most knowledgeable and caring instructors I've ever had. The whole outdoor & wilderness medicine community has lost one of its shining stars. Though Tom's memory and legacy will carry on burning bright through the many students lives he changed for the better. Thank you, Tom, for who you are and setting such a great example for all of us to follow you!

Thank you, Tom. You set the standard for me for teaching and wilderness professionalism. In a brief course, you nudged my life in a positive direction, and there's much that sticks with me ("slow is fast") that applies to life in general. I am sad that you have passed from us.

I was a student of Tom and Lucca's this past May at their school in Leavenworth. The news of this tragedy has greatly sadenned me and has been continuously on my mind over the last few weeks. The prayers of my family gone out to you, Lucca, and to all of Tom's family and friends. I will remember Tom as being as a personable, caring person who was incredibly gifted, knowledgeable, and passionate in what he taught us. He made an impact on me and so many others, and I feel priviledged to have been given the chance of knowing him.

Lucca I'm sorry for your loss, Tom was an amazing human being, but you know that.
As I sit in Colorado taking a moment to remember Tom, I 'm saddened that I couldn't be in Leavenworth with old friends and share in the collective remembering.
Some of my favorite memories are sitting at the top shack of 7th heaven having thought prevoking conversations, watermelon seed machine gun fights at lunch time while rafting, and his calming words on the Grand Canyon. He had a great influance on my life and I will miss him greatly. My sympathys go out to all that have known him.

Tom, I am still in shock from your passing. Your WFR Class gave me tools I will use for the rest of my career, and life. We in the Grand Canyon Community enjoyed your spirit, and humor. You became a part of our Grand Canyon Family. You are sorely missed, but we are all better folks for having had you in our lives.

Lucca and Family,
I knew Tom as a friend and mentor during my progresssion from assistant to lead instructor with WMA. Much of what I learned I still use in my life today. He was one to take time to teach and guide when others would just pass me by. As a fellow air medical transport professional, it is hard to here of his passing. I know that he was doing what he loved right until the end.

I am Tom’s uncle. I have long appreciated Tom’s love of the Wilderness and the solace it brings. When Tom and Lucca were married, we went to their wedding in Leavenworth. This was by far the furthest my sister, Joan, Tom’s mother, had ever traveled out of Ohio. She had cancer and did not have long to live. The beautiful, alp-like countryside reminded her of the “Sound of Music”, her favorite movie, so she broke into song with the rest of us joining in, singing all the music as we drove through the picturesque scenery. This was the happiest I had seen her in a long time. Rather than come to her funeral, Tom decided to spend limited funds to see her before she passed. Now he is with her. My heartfelt sympathies to Lucca!

Dear Lucca and Clausing Family,
I never met Tom, but I have read these loving notes. I feel a kinship with Tom and the other flight medics and nurses, having been a hospital code responder, wilderness guide, and trip leader on the Colorado.
I work at CWU. After my daughter died four years ago, we created a native plant/native butterfly garden on campus in her honor. I will plant a perennially blooming native bleeding heart in Leah's garden to honor Tom and his caring service. What a Big Heart (I can tell from his photos!). We will be hiking in the Icicle area this weekend, and will carry Tom's strong and living spirit with us.
Lucca, and Tom's siblings, my heart thoughts are with you. Thank you for loving this beautiful person.

Dear Lucca,
Tom was topnotch. After taking his WFR class several years ago I felt so prepared to step into a wilderness medical situation. I also knew that when I was out climbing, rafting, hiking, kayaking, backcountry skiing, etc. that if I was ever in need of medical assistance Tom was THE MAN I would want to come to my rescue. Someday I may come to a point where I have to step up and use my WFR skills; believe me I will be thinking of Tom and what he would do in such a situation.

Lucca and family,
What a loss in our lives at the loss of Tom. I knew him as a friend and team mate. Someone happy with his life and ready to share his knowledge or experience. I will always remember him at a Chelan County Mountain Rescue refresher, explaining the equipment, its function and the safety built into the system. I don’t ever remember him without his smile. May your friends and family help, as your heart grieves for this wonderful man.

I heard the story of the helicopter accident on the radio this afternoon and rushed to the internet for more detail, hoping so much that I would not find Tom's name there.
I have worked with Tom through two WFR classes here in Skamokawa, and I had assumed that I would be working with and learning from him for years to come. He was one of the best teachers of any subject that I've ever had.
I was speechless and stunned when I saw his name listed amongst the casualties of this accident. I'm so sorry...

Tom is an inspiration in my life. I have known few people with his talents in teaching, medical expertise, and outdoor skill as well as his overall jovial aptitude. His accomplishments will resonate through the lives he saved, those that he has touched, and those who are practicing the craft he taught. Condolences to those he held close; you are in my thoughts. Tom’s strong presence has persevered in my life and he represents an ideal I will continually strive toward.

Oh man.. how sad it is to learn the news. I heard about crash on NPR today. I knew only one man who flew in helicopters over Flagstaff - Tom Clausing. Tom with whom I ski patrolled at Stevens, who's WFR classes I attended and from whom I learned a great deal on the subject of wilderness first aid, who rescued scores of skiers, climbers, rafters etc, who himself was a great skier and climber and rafter/kayaker... Who I ran into once at Denali base camp on South East fork of Kahiltna glacier in Alaska: me teaching climbing courses, him being on Denali climb patrol. It couldn't be him. In my country we say that men like Tom "...don't drown in water and don't burn in fire". I scanned the web, didn't see the names at first and was relieved somewhat. Then... I saw it. What can I say? What a very-very untimely, tragic and sad mishap. In my quiet modest way I am sending strength and good energy to all who new Tom. I join in grieve and celebration of Tom's incredible life with all of you.

Our dear friend Tom; seems like only yesterday that we were working our way up the Bright Angel Trail with one of your many Grand Canyon patients from the inner canyon. I will never forget your humor and how you could even make a person with a broken leg laugh while being littered out of the Canyon. We will remember your whit every time we watch one of your canyon videos. Knowing and working with you was a definite privilege; we will miss you Tom!
To the Clausing family and friends; please accept our sincere condolences.
We would also like to pass along our condolences to the other six victims, along with their families and friends.

What a gift it was to work with Lucca and Tom for the last 8 years. I have always felt more of a friend and peer than an employee and am privileged to be a part of the RSI world. The life you two have built together is an inspiration, from the school you've created to the way you've always respected each others dreams and aspirations. As many have said, Tom had an incredible talent for education and he was hands down the best instructor I have ever had. It was his constant pursuit of excellence that made everyone around him want to be better and believe they could be better. He was always scheming up ways to improve any situation, and boy look out if you were part of his scheme, as before you know it you'd be agreeing to to things you never thought you would. He just had that way with people. My life in Leavenworth began with your WEMT class Tom and Lucca, and because of you I have stayed here and made my life in this wonderful place. Tom, your memory will forever live on in the thousands of students who shared your classroom and the legacy you've left with RSI, WMA, the NPS and all the other TLA organizations that have had the privilege of working with you. You are the gold standard to which all other educators in my life will compare and I thank you deeply for your friendship, your hugs, your smiles and your encouragement. There is now a void in my life that will never be filled. Lucca, you are in my thoughts daily.

Lucca, please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. I feel so very lucky to have been one of Tom's students (WEMT Sept 05) and knew from day one of the course he was one of the best teachers I had come across. An adult audience is a hard crowd and he captivated us all. I will miss him and will remember him with great fondness.

I only had the privilege of knowing Tom for a short time during a WEMT course I took with him in the spring of 2008. He made a significant impression on me while I was there though and is a man I look up to and deeply respect for his commitment to helping others. I know Tom impacted many lives through working as a professional rescuer and teacher and his memory will live on through the legacy he has left behind. My prayers go out to the entire Clausing family and especially to Lucca during this difficult time.

Tom, Tom, we always assumed and hoped we'd run into you again on a river...somewhere...somehow, but I guess that wasn't in the cards. We learned so much from you -including the zen of rafting and some of our best river guide jokes. So many wonderful and funny memories to thank you for. You will be missed, terribly. Lucca, we still hope to run into you downstream; we're sending all of our love and good thoughts your way.

We have just learned of Tom's passing. We are very sorry for the loss and will keep Tom, his immediate family and friends, and his NPS family in our thoughts and prayers.
Tom had a bigger heart than most could imagine. His presence, knowledge and acceptance was most felt and understood by the United States Air Force Reserve Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). We had the opportunity to work with and learn from Tom in Grand Canyon National Park during Tom's employment with the park service. Tom really made us feel like part of the Grand Canyon EMS team. He was a sharp paramedic, terrific teacher and just an all around great guy and we know that he will be truly missed.
With deepest sympathy.

Tom was an exceptional individual, as everyone who had the opportunity to meet him knows. I thank the opportunity Tom gave me in Leavenworth a couple of years ago while I was starting with WMA. Lucca, my thoughts are with you and will continue to be.

To Lucca and the Clausing family:
There are no words that could possibly console your loss at this time. I just want you to know this. Tom made a lasting impression on thousands and thousands of people. I had the priviledge of being one of his many students. Even thought that interaction was well over a decade ago, the image he left with me will last forever. He was a top-notch educator: brilliantly knowledgeable, compassionate, articulate, with a fine sense of humor. In situations I encounter even to this day, I sometimes ask myself "What would Tom do?"

Tom had a unique way of sharing his love and respect for the outdoors with others through his positive attitude and wit. If, in conversation, you started a sentence with "I'd really like to...", you'd often be doing whatever your desire was or deep in the planning stages within minutes.

Lucca,
Tom and I grew up together in Worthington, OH, and we both had dreams of moving out west. Coincidently, we both pursued careers in EMS. Tom moved out west immediately after high school; unfortunately, it to me until 2000 to find my mountain oasis. It has been three years since Tom and I went skiing at Mt. Bachelor in Bend, OR; unfortunately, this would be the last time we would see each other. Tom’s passion, intensity, and excellence for alpine sports and rescue were unmatched.
When I saw the news coverage of the mid-air collision in Flagstaff, AZ; I was hoping that Tom was not involved. Tragically, these events happen too often in our small community of wilderness rescue professionals. I hope you can take some comfort in Tom’s unselfish service and care to others, and that he was lost while providing lifesaving aid to another—what he did so well and with such craft.

My thoughts and prayers to Lucca, family, and other accident victims.
Tom changed my life. He made me realize that I didn't need to be a doctor to save lives... and that my understanding of patient assessment was the HUGE key. My first course was with Tom 12 years ago at Lewis and Clark College, and I have religiously made the trip back to rescue specialists to re-cert, and re train regularly. Throughout the process I have heard story after story of how Tom has interviened with natural selection. I have been trained by Olympic coaches, and experts in many fields, but none that really had the whole package like Tom- one of the best mentors I've ever had. I am devastated by the loss of such a hero. Tom, you are truly an inspiration.

Tom had an impact upon the lives of many and will never be forgotten. I had the priviledge of learning from Tom and he was an outstanding teacher. Many have benefited greatly from his guidance and expertise and he was a great source of advice well after he initially trained us in emergency medicine. As one of many in federal law enforcement who was trained by Tom, we recognize that he was an inspiration to those who choose to dedicate themselves to a higher purpose while accepting the risks and sacrifices as part of his calling to help others.
