Paul Cahill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 30, 2007.
Two Boston firefighters were killed and at least 12 others were injured Wednesday night as flames rushed through a restaurant in West Roxbury, collapsing the roof and trapping crews inside, public safety officials said.

The two veteran firefighters who died, Paul J. Cahill, 55, of Scituate and Warren J. Payne, 53, of Canton, were identified by the officials and a firefighter on the scene. They were the first deaths of firefighters in a fire since 1994.

"Tonight is a very sad night for the city of Boston,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino said. "Two of our bravest have lost their lives in a fire in West Roxbury. Our prayers and offers of help are extended to the families of those two firefighters and the other firefighters who were injured in the line of duty. This is a dangerous job, and these firefighters answered the call."

To the Family of Paul J. Cahill:

My wife, Barbara, joins me, admittedly a little late due to medical tests, but our condolences are nonetheless as sincere. I had the pleasure of working with Paul's father, Pat, at District 4 for several years. Pat was an honorable and dedicated police officer and as the apple does not fall far from the tree, so was Paul an equally dedicated firefighter who made the supreme sacrifice. Our prayers go to all his family that God will give them the strength to get through this terrivle ordeal. May God Bless all of you. Our love and prayers,

To the Cahill family, friends and brother firefighters:

Although I know none of you, as the grandson of a retired firefighter and son and brother of current firefighters in New Bedford, MA, Paul’s heroism and ultimate sacrifice hit close to home, as every firefighter family lives with the fear that is now your grief and mourning. Although words can not alleviate the pain you now feel, the words of the mayor of the City of Worcester after the tragic loss of the six Worcester firefighters in December 1999 stuck with me all these years. Addressing the families, friends and fellow firefighters of the fallen Worcester firefighters, he told them that their sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, and friends would always be with them, much like Paul will always be with you. Although you may not be able to see him the way you used to, he has not left you and will never abandon you. All you have to do is open your heart and listen and he will be there to guide you every step of the way. For those looking for a hero, you don’t have to look very far. A hero is a firefighter who runs into a burning building, never thinking of himself.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Paul and all his brother firefighters are true heroes.

To Shauna, Adam, and Brendan,

I repeat what I just wrote to the sons of Mr. Payne. Your Dad makes me want to be a better person. I hope the pride you must feel for your incredible father helps in some small way to ease the pain of your loss. He is a hero not just to Boston but to mankind. Sending love and warmth to your entire family during this difficult time. I will never forget his bravery and his sacrifice, and I will be forever grateful.

paul cahill was my cousin on my fathers side, he was older than me, so i did'nt know him very well, but i did grow up with his sister jean, we went to high school together. i was also close to his brothers jim and patrick, we all summered together in marshfield mass. yesterday was the most amazing tribute that i have ever witnessed, such an outpouring of love and respect for an amazing man. i just wanted to say, i was honored to be a part of his family and to thank all the firefighters that participated in his memorial.

May God embrace and comfort all of you in this tragic time. I am most impressed by the bond that all firefighters from all over share and what an impression it leaves when they all come together at times like these. May He protect all firefighters everywhere for their unconditional bravery that they show every day for all of us. God bless. I am so glad Cardinal Sean was there to pray with all of you. Dear Pat & Family,
This missive is written with a heavy heart, my deepest condolences to all of the Cahill’s and their families in your time of distress. The outpouring of support shows how much Paul meant to you and I am sure, so many whose lives he touched as a fun loving individual. I have felt the loss of someone near and dear, so my heart goes out to you all with profound grief. I am sure you will all carry his legacy as a son, brother, nephew, friend and as a consummate public servant in your heart as you go through the healing process.

Many individuals in life squander the calling to follow their dreams and live an entire life regretting their lack of decision. Pat, your brother Paul followed his dream, although short he will continue his sojourn in eternal life as a Soldier with the Lord. Here on earth he took up the call that from all that I have read about your family has been best described in the immortal words of John F. Kennedy “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. One of the noblest professions in public service is to serve one’s country as a soldier and community as Paul did as a firefighter.

Sorry, I missed you by a few minutes at Florian Hall last evening. Please accept this note with all the prayers and blessings from my family to yours. As your colleague here at the MBTA, if I can be of any assistance in your time of need please don't hesitate to call.

Anne,
It was so sad to see that the Anne and Paul Cahill on the news was actually the Anne we know from so many years ago when we worked together at Colpitts World Travel in Dedham. I didn't realize Paul was from Dedham and from such a big family. My family went to Dedham High as well so I am sure we crossed paths. My heart goes out to you and your children. I hope that the many wonderful memories you must have of Paul will help you through this difficult time. Take care.

Fallen Jakes

Numerous messages to God since Wednesday…
Bless our brothers, the fallen Jakes
It seems there’s never rhyme nor reason
For whom He decides to take

Again we’re forced to struggle with the fact
That He’s taken two of our bravest
If we could, we brothers, march to heaven
From Him their souls we’d outwrest

But such is the fate of the dedicated Jake
Much, much too often
Though they died doing the job they loved
This blow cannot be softened

It crushes their families, kills their dreams
Of happy times together
They must go on, remembering their souls
Will live with them forever

We fellow firefighters in the “brotherhood”
Have lost two of our own
Like countless of our brothers before them
It still cuts to the bone

And lest we forget their brothers in arms
Who fought by their side
Some of whom still lay in hospital beds
Lucky to have not died

Our hearts may go out to all of the above
For they all suffer today
They’ll pick up the pieces the best they can
Each in their own way

But our prayers are for the eternal souls
Of two true Boston heroes
Who did their jobs until the very end
Earning them their haloes

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cahill family at the tragic loss of Paul. Although I did not know Paul, I knew his Dad Pat when I worked with him in the DA's Office. He was a very special man, always talking about his family and what they were up to and how proud he was of all of them. I can tell by the tributes here that Paul was the same kind, loving, caring, funny man. My son is a firefighter and my husband and Dad are both retired firefighters. God Bless you all and may your memories of Paul help you through these sad days.

I live very close to the fire department and Paul J. Cahill was among a few of the first responders during a cardiac incident I was having. They were giving me oxygen until the EMT's and Paramedics arrived. His face really stayed in my memory, like a perfect picture and then when I saw that he died in the fire I felt sad. I felt sad that someone who aided in saving me was now passed. I panic when my heart beats too fast but seeing his face on TV and in the news really made me wish I took a moment just to say "thank you".

Dear Cahill Family,
Although more than a generation of firefighters has passed since my dad's retirement from the BFD, I feel for you. My dad, Chief Mike Laurano was Division A's deputy chief in the late 70's and early 80's. He loved his work and always instilled in us the serious nature of his job. To this day, a trip past Ladder 24 on Cambridge Street, Boston stirs alot of emotion and pride in me.

We always lived with the fear of your worst nightmare, and I cannot even imagine any words for your inconsolable sorrow.
May God give you the strength to get through these unspeakable and sad times. When I heard of Paul's untimely death, it brought to mind my dad's sadness when he lost his brothers in the line of duty.
God Bless you and keep you. You are in my prayers.
