The two veteran firefighters who died, Paul J. Cahill, 55, of Scituate and Warren J. Payne, 53, of Canton, were identified by the officials and a firefighter on the scene. They were the first deaths of firefighters in a fire since 1994.
"Tonight is a very sad night for the city of Boston,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino said. "Two of our bravest have lost their lives in a fire in West Roxbury. Our prayers and offers of help are extended to the families of those two firefighters and the other firefighters who were injured in the line of duty. This is a dangerous job, and these firefighters answered the call."

It's been three years since you've left us and just wanted you to know that I miss you deeply. As kids growing up, you and I fought often, but we always knew that we loved each other. It's taken me a long time to return to this page and my heart still aches. About a month ago you came to me in my sleep and hugged me and looked down on me with those ever teasing eyes and your beautiful smile. I still talk with Patricia and every now and then we do hang out. She still loves you and will never forget you. I do believe God sent me to take care of her while you are away. Our life together is not over, it's just in the pause mode. Your children are doing well. I love you and rest in peace until we meet again. The one and only sister that you always teased. Bessie L. May the right hand of God be upon you all and may some measure of comfort and peace be found. I am sorry that sorrow has dimmed your eyes with the sudden loss of Warren. He has left a void in my life and I grieve deeply with all of you. One tear drop at a time, one day at a time, one step at a time, beyond that a long good bye to Warren.

To the Payne Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The tribute given to Warren continues to honor his life. Please know that his sacrifice will be remembered forever in our family as there are over fourteen firefighters in our family that belong to Warren's brotherhood. May the love and the dedication that he had for you and his job give you pride and comfort to your lives forever. God bless you all.

Words cannot express the love and fond memories that will remain in our hearts for my cousin Warren Payne. He was an inspiration to us and his fellow fire fighters. Never would our families have expected the "true love, care, dedication, and inspiration" that was demonstrated to our family (PAYNE & FOWLKES') , as well as to the Cahill family by the gentlemen fire fighters from around North America. They paid their their respect and showed their "true brotherhood" on behalf of their fallen brethren!
The firefighters truly proved how close-nit they are to one another, and they also demonstrated how they are "NATURAL BORN HEROS" to us all! We will MISS WARREN DEARLY!
With love to our family and those who entered their expressions into this guestbook. GOD BLESS AND THANK YOU FOR CARING!

To the Payne family, friends and brother firefighters:
Words can not express the collective sorrow and grief felt for the tragic loss of Warren. Please know that there are thousands who grieve with you and honor Warren’s heroism and sacrifice. Although I know none of you, as the grandson of a retired firefighter and son and brother of current firefighters in New Bedford, MA, Warren’s heroism and ultimate sacrifice hit close to home, as every firefighter family lives with the fear that is now your grief and mourning.
We are all forever grateful for Warren’s bravery and dedicated service. A hero is a firefighter who runs into a burning building, never thinking of himself. Warren Payne is a hero and we will forever honor his memory. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Jeremy & Jonathan,
My name is Heather and I am law student in Boston. I just had the privilege of watching your father's beautiful funeral service on TV after following the tragic story of his untimely death. It was an honor to get a glimpse into the life of such an incredible man. What he gave for that greater love will live on in our hearts and memories forever. Your father makes me want to be a better person. I just thought that you should know that. I hope the pride you must feel for your Dad helps in some small way to ease the pain of this time.
God Bless you. With love and gratitude to both Mr. Payne and Mr. Cahill always,

As I watched Paul Cahill's funeral yesterday, I wondered how I could watch Warren's today. My God, I did not know these guys, but I was so sad.
There are certainly no words I can offer that can comfort you, except. I am praying for you and Warren.
What does stick in my mind is what we consider to be today's hero's. It may be the Greatest Baseball Player or the Greatest Basketball Player, but do we ever stop to thing of the local Firefighter? It must be wonderful to go out and play the game that you love and have people cheering you on, but what about the fires that occur every night, where countless firefighters go, with no recognigtion at all? My God, we do have our priorities backwards. The FF's are the hero's. The others, yeah, they are good, but they are not Great! To Warren and Paul, to their families, to the BFD, to all FF's.....GOD BLESS YOU.

To Patricia Hackett
I find an old photograph and see your smile.
As I feel your presence anew,
I am filled with warmth
and my heart remembers love.
I read an old card sent many years ago
during a time of turmoil and confusion.
The soothing words written then
still caress my spirit and brings me peace.
I remember who you used to be
the laughter we shared
and wonder what you have become.
Where are you now, Where did you go,
When the body is left behind
and the spirit is released to fly?
Perhaps you are the morning bird
singing joyfully at sunrise,
or the butterfly that dances
so carelessly on the breeze
or the rainbow of colors
that brightens a stormy sky
or the fingers of afternoon mist
delicately reaching over the mountains or the final few rays of the setting sun lighting up the skies edging the clouds with a magical glow.
I miss your being
but I feel your presence,
In whatever form you choose to take, however you now choose to be.
Your spirit has become for me
a guardian angel on high guiding, advising, and watching over me.
I remember you.
You are with me
and I am not afraid.

May God embrace and comfort all of you in this tragic time. Life Saver
Good fearless and kind,
My life saver Warren is on my mind,
His spirit free and loving a combination hard to find,
Good fearless and strong,
For my life saver two minutes was too long,
"Anybody in there" his favorite song,
Hurray up and count, do not be wrong,
In the heat of the battle is where his heart belong,
Good, fearless and full of love,
Now my life saver has gone above,
Above all fires above excitement,
We are sure his "life saving" is not spent,
Here is his wish to go out with a bang,
All of us has gathered in a gang,
For the life saver saving was a favor,
Now life saver has gone back to the life giver.

Fallen Jakes
Numerous messages to God since Wednesday…
Bless our brothers, the fallen Jakes
It seems there’s never rhyme nor reason
For whom He decides to take
Again we’re forced to struggle with the fact
That He’s taken two of our bravest
If we could, we brothers, march to heaven
From Him their souls we’d outwrest
But such is the fate of the dedicated Jake
Much, much too often
Though they died doing the job they loved
This blow cannot be softened
It crushes their families, kills their dreams
Of happy times together
They must go on, remembering their souls
Will live with them forever
We fellow firefighters in the “brotherhood”
Have lost two of our own
Like countless of our brothers before them
It still cuts to the bone
And lest we forget their brothers in arms
Who fought by their side
Some of whom still lay in hospital beds
Lucky to have not died
Our hearts may go out to all of the above
For they all suffer today
They’ll pick up the pieces the best they can
Each in their own way
But our prayers are for the eternal souls
Of two true Boston heroes
Who did their jobs until the very end
Earning them their haloes

Dear Payne Family,
Although more than a generation of firefighters has passed since my dad's retirement from the BFD, I feel for you. My dad, Chief Mike Laurano was Division A's deputy chief in the late 70's and early 80's. He loved his work and always instilled in us the serious nature of his job. To this day, a trip past Ladder 24 on Cambridge Street, Boston stirs alot of emotion and pride in me.
We always lived with the fear of your worst nightmare, and I cannot even imagine any words for your inconsolable sorrow.
May God give you the strength to get through these unspeakable and sad times. When I heard of Warren's untimely death, it brought to mind my dad's sadness when he lost his brothers in the line of duty.
God Bless you and keep you. You are in my prayers.

The Firefighter's Prayer
When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child before it is too late
Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.
And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;
Please bless with your protecting hand,
my children and my wife.
