Willie McCowan Obituary

Willie Clayton McCowan Springfield Willie Clayton McCowan, age 83, of Springfield, MI, died Friday evening, August 8, 2008 at The Laurels of Galesburg, following a lengthy illness. Willie was born on August 22, 1924 in Monterey, TN and was the son of William N. and Rosetta (Phillips) McCowan. He had worked construction sites in the area and retired from his own business, McCowan's Lawn Care Service. Willie enjoyed rabbit hunting, Country music, Blue Grass music and following the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. He was a member of the Laborers Local, AFL-CIO #355. On February 22, 1942, in Atlanta, GA, Willie was united in marriage to the former Geneva L. Tinch, who preceded him in death on February 17, 1998. Surviving are his daughter: Willie Hack of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren, including Karlena J. "Karla" LeBoeuf, with whom he resided; 16 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Grace Smith and Jean (Willard) Vaughn-both of Battle Creek, and Lucillie Phipps of Monterey, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son: Michael McCowan; his daughter: Reba Lees; his grandson: Terry Hack; three sisters: Mearty McCowan, Allie Phipps and Maudie Smith; and by three brothers: Boyd, Bailey and Bill McCowan. At the request of the family, friends may call on Thursday, August 14th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. The funeral service to celebrate Willie's life will be held on Friday, August 15th at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert G. Muirhead, of Battle Creek, officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. A personal message to the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle. com

I knew Willie through the union and was a retiree at local 355 and he always stopped in to chat back when he was in good health. I will miss him dearly, he was good man.
