David Bate Obituary

David W. Bate Battle Creek David W. Bate, 67, of Battle Creek, died August 14, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. He was born to Edward Fleming and Cecelia (Mullen) Bate and had spent all his life in the Cereal City. David graduated from St. Philip High School and worked for 19 years at Eaton Manufacturing in Springfield. David also owned and operated Dave Bate's Auto Livery Used Car Sales. He married Patricia Ann (Wiegand) on January 25, 1964. Patricia survives. Also surviving are a son, David (Maureen) Bate, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida; daughters, Carol Sue (David) Anderson of Mattawan, Angel (Jeffrey) Lau of Auburn Hills; "Papa's" treasured grandchildren, Juliet Sue Anderson, Cecelia Marie Anderson, Emma Ann Lau, Quincy David Tze Lau and David William Bate III; sister, Carol (Pete) Atzman of Denver, Colorado; brother, Edward F. Bate, Jr. of Bloomington, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Sue L. Wiegand of Battle Creek; and 10 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael M. Bate; and son, Scott Allen Bate. David had a lifelong love affair with cars. He was the proud owner of numerous historical vehicles, passing his love of automobiles on to his son, David Bate, Jr. Dave enjoyed people and was a friend to everyone who knew him. He loved music, art and spending time with his family and grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3:00 p.m. and 5 until 7:00 p.m. today at Shaw Funeral Home. A Rosary service will take place at 7:00 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2008 at St. Philip Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Charles Fischer officiating. Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Music Center of South Central Michigan. To Pat and the kids: I was so sorry to hear about David. There were only two times I met him: at Terry and Ted's wedding and Melissa and Scott's wedding. What a nice man he was, and such a good sport. I really enjoyed my conversations with him. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
