Raymond Smith Obituary

Raymond Cecil "Ray" Smith Pennfield Twp. Raymond Cecil "Ray" Smith, age 85, of Pennfield Township, died Tuesday evening, August 19, 2008, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness. Ray was born on December 11, 1922 in Michigan City, IN and was the son of Grover Cleveland and Bessie Belle (Lopp) Smith. He was one of six brothers and five sisters. Ray graduated from Niles (MI) High School and had been a member of its football team. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a P.F.C. during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Ray was a salesman and during his career, he worked for Sears, K-Mart, Meijer's and other establishments, as well as having his own businesses. Ray loved to write, going to auctions, but his passion was dancing. He was voted the best dancer in high school and continued dancing until his stroke in 2000. On March 31, 1973 in Battle Creek, Ray was united in marriage to the former, Jean R. Gammons and she survives. Also surviving are his son: Gary (Dottie) Smith of San Andreas, CA; two daughters: Judith Smith of Atlanta, GA and Tara Woodard of Zephyrhills, FL; a stepdaughter: Valerie (Roger) Hodge of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and by his previous wives: Frances Frucci and Patricia Ashley. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. As per Ray's request, cremation has taken place and final interment will be held at a later date. All family and friends are invited to a time of remembrance and fellowship at the Smith residence, 20207 Capital Avenue, NE (directly across from Carter's Lumber Company) on Sunday, August 24th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Instead of memorial contributions, we ask that you love your neighbor, give to the poor and help your family. The Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, is in charge of all the arrangements. A personal message to the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com
