Dorothy Bennett Obituary

Dorothy Marie Bennett Union City Dorothy Marie Bennett, 94, of Union City, died Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Battle Creek. Dorothy was born March 16, 1914 to Paul C. and Carrie (Freed) Smith in Bartlow, Ohio. She graduated from Union City High School in 1932. She married Frank Nelson Bennett on November 18, 1933 in Defiance, Ohio. Dorothy had worked as a bookkeeper for various insurance companies and local townships, a judicial accountant for the district courts, and as a medical assistant at one time. She had even served as the treasurer of Calhoun County, retiring in 1980. Dorothy was raised in the Union City/Athens / Burlington area and lived there all of her life. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Athens, S.C.O.R.E., the Democratic Party, the Retired Executives Association, and was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star. Dorothy never stopped learning. She enjoyed reading and obtained her real estate license at the age of seventy-five. Dorothy is survived by her sons, Bernard and the late Carleen Bennett of Union City and Burdette and Shannon Bennett of Battle Creek; brother, Richard Smith of Union City; 9 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and 3 great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Frank Bennett in 1996; son, Bruce Bennett; 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Pastor Karen Nachtigall will officiate. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Union City Alumni Scholarship Fund or the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. The family would like to thank all of the staff at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility for their excellent tender love and care. Bernie, Burdette and families. My heart is with you this week but I am down in Tennessee at my daughters so I will be unable to attend the services. Please accept my sincere apology for not being there in body but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Aunt Dottie was truly an exceptional woman. love Julie
