George Briggs Obituary

George DeRoy Briggs Brooksville, FL George DeRoy Briggs of Brooksville, Florida, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008 in Brooksville, Florida. He was born on August 23, 1929 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Artemus O. and Daisey D. (Curtis) Briggs. George retired from Post Cereals in 1988 with 40+ years of service. He was also employed at Post Gardens as a youngster; Stedman's Grocery; set pins at a local Battle Creek bowling alley; and drove school bus for the Battle Creek Public Schools. He became a permanent resident of Florida approximately 15 years ago. George was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian J. (Wenger) Briggs, in 1992; by his siblings, Lola Cook, Weldon Briggs, Cecil Wilson, Winifred (Peg) Wilbur and Louis Briggs; and by one grandchild, Jonathan Micah Clark. Surviving are his wife, Zula (Peg) Briggs, whom he married March 6, 1993; daughters: Darlene Clark and Georgina "Jodie" (Robert) Morris, both of Battle Creek, MI, Maureen (Dennis) Jackson of Newaygo, MI and Leslie Briggs of Pahrump, NV; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. George served as a Scout Master, enjoyed square dancing, golfing, fishing, writing poetry, traveling, playing cards, reading Louis L'Amour books, and watching baseball. He was a member of the Brooksville Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He loved his family and dwelled in the goodness of the Lord and Savior. At the request of the family, friends may call Wednesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Services to celebrate George's life will be officiated by Bob Heine at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008. Interment will follow at Ellis Cemetery in Assyria Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, Brooks Plaza, 698 S. Broad St., Brooksville, MI 34601. Our years on West Burnham are full of memories of the Briggs family, the girls all playing together. George was probably the most handsome man on our street, and his gentle and kind ways were appreciated. He had a good sense of humor and was always there to help out. My thoughts are with you at this time.
