Betty Akins Obituary

Betty Akins Battle Creek Betty Akins, 81, of Battle Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. She had been a resident at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility for six years. Betty was born March 15, 1927 in Charlotte, North Carolina and was adopted and raised by Elizabeth Lowe. Betty was a 1947 graduate of Battle Creek Central and lived most of her life in Battle Creek. She was employed as an aide at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility, until retiring on May 31, 1990. Betty married William P. "Bill" Akins in Battle Creek on June 26, 1951. She was preceded in death by Bill, her husband of 56 years, March 18, 2007, and by a sister, Patricia Ostrander. Surviving are two sons, William P. Akins, Jr. and Daniel L. Akins, and a brother and sister-in-law, Fran and Wanda Akins, all of Battle Creek. Betty was a member of Central Christian Church. She and Bill enjoyed camping and were members of Good Sam's Travel Trailer Club and Holiday Rambler Trailer Club. She also enjoyed country music, needlepoint and growing more vegetables than needed; giving the excess produce to neighbors and friends. She was a lifelong Bearcat fan, especially when her son Dan was coaching. At the request of the family, friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Services to celebrate Betty's life will be officiated by Pastor Daniel L. Akins at Central Christian Church 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Christian Church, 713 Riverside Dr., Battle Creek, MI 49015. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com
